There’s always a steady flow of planes flying into DCA every day. You can’t miss the never-ending stream of lights of planes making their approach at night.

Any military pilot who has experience flying in that area would know the directions the planes are coming from at any given time. Truly bewildering how an Army Blackhawk pilot would not be on the lookout for a passenger plane on approach.

Seems from the ATC communication the H60 was told to fly behind the CRJ….the flight path on the H60 looks very odd and doesn’t look like he tried to fly behind him. Something weird

The view from above (lines on the map) shows he had to turn in order to cross the jet's path. Would have gone behind him staying straight.

The Kennedy Center view picks up after the turn and makes it look like he went right at the jet.

Looks deliberate, but I'm a layman. One of our pilots might be able to tell us if there's a way to make that mistake without intending to.

Not if pilots are accepting a visual clearance.

Interesting to know if night vision goggles were/won't in use. Low level vision at night can be disconcerting with the amount of light pollution from large Metropolitan areas. Someone's head wasn't on a swivel.

Obviously you’d know better than me, but I find it hard to believe that the air traffic controller isn’t responsible to ensure that two aircraft aren’t crossing paths too close, especially at night.

That’s crazy.

Just don't understand why the chopper is anywhere near the landing zone of the airport.

I'm pretty sure the choppers are always flying on the east bank of the potomac in that general area. I know I've seen a bunch flying in/out of DCA before

Pilot applied visual separation is very commonly used tool.

That’s what they’re saying on the tv too

Said that several three letter agencies utilize army helicopters in the city.

The audio says they were in contact of the helicopter and even informed the Blackhawk what to do.

They did not for some reason

I was on a flight about 40 minutes out from landing at DCA and we got turned around to go back to BNA. Literally a “could have been me” moment.

A major Military/Intel presence across from Reagan. Those helo pilots should've been following a published departure routing, and should've been advising Controllers of their intent.

Reported the plane split in 2 and landed in 7’ of water per local news. Helicopter is upside down and not stable. Bobbing.

Divers on scene. Haven’t been able to get into the helicopter.
