I thought Assad got out of dodge a few days ago.
If (I am not convinced) that Assad was onboard that aircraft, I wonder if there was a struggle for control. It was circling back towards Homs, which was captured by the rebels.

That track shows the original direction to be toward the northwest, from the interior of Syria. I don't know where he'd be fleeing to, or from, going that direction.
