Sounds to me like they may already come boiled.
I work in the pipeline construction business and have seen firsthand the aftermath of one of these ruptures. This also isn't the first time something like this has happened with Boardwalk. It usually is a result of something hitting a pipeline or having gas still on a pipeline when work starts on a repair. I imagine this is probably from an old weld. I kinda wish we would get that call to go fix because the check book opens bigtime in these cases but I'm sure my Louisiana competition are on speed dial right now.

if not external third party damage, my guess is internal bacterial corrosion caused a pin hole leak that ruptured

How does a gas pipeline just explode unless intentional or someone hit it while digging?
Overpressure (doubt it) or mechanical failure also a possibility. Corrosion is unlikely.

That rice is about to become the most expensive rice known to man.
Thankfully looks like nobody was working on the pipeline when this blowout happened which leads me to believe that this probably happened at a weld. Could be corrosion but unlikely unless this is an ancient pipeline or this could of been a replaced segment and possibly defective workmanship. Either way, this could of been so much worse.

Very old pipelines can split, almost like you cut open a piece of sausage. This is very rare and usually very old lines. But there are lines in SWLA that were put in service in the late 1930s and 1940s.

Yep some of these lines are pushing 90-100 years old. It’s kinda scary when you think about it. A lot of these lines to be lowered from losing cover over the years. It would costs a fortune but could minimize a catastrophic incident

JEFF DAVIS PARISH, La. (KPLC) - An evacuation order has been lifted after a gas pipeline burst west of Jennings this morning.
The Jeff Davis Parish Police Jury evacuated about 20 homes near Farm Supply Road between North Frontage Road and U.S. 90 around 8:30. The all clear has been given, and residents are allowed to return home.
U.S. 90 has been reopened between Monger Road and La. 395.
Sheriff Kyle Miers said the leak has been sealed off, and the methane gas in the line burned off quickly. He said an air quality test came back clear.
Welsh-Roanoke Junior High was under a precautionary lockdown, but it was lifted shortly after 9.
Boardwalk Pipelines, which operates the pipeline, sent the following statement to KPLC:
“This morning, September 18, Texas Gas Transmission, LLC was notified of a release on its 16-inch pipeline Southwest of Jennings, LA. Our internal response team responded and shut in the pipeline. A fire also occurred and is now extinguished. There have been no injuries associated with the incident.
“Appropriate regulatory notifications were made, and Texas Gas is working closely with Louisiana State Police and other responding agencies. The safety of the community, the environment and our people is a top priority.
“As more information is provided, we will update as appropriate.”
