People saying Katrina, are a little off

Katrina was the cherry on top, but the forced bussing law was the start

Hard to argue against the desegregation case as BR’s turning point. Had a girlfriend in early 90s who was bussed from about 1/4 mile from Woodlawn all the way down to Lee High. Or whatever they’re calling it these days. Anyway, she literally could have walked to school at Woodlawn, but Judge Parker believed it was better for her to ride a bus for 2 hours every day.

Her parents couldn’t leave that area, but you can damn sure bet that anyone with means to leave would’ve definitely left sooner than later.

It put BR on the map & destroyed it at the same time.

School Deseg - it was a disaster the way they handled it.
Mayors who did nothing while other similar cities left Baton Rouge in the dust - talking about Screen and the long term Tom Ed McHugh.

We had kids bussed from Scotlandville to Central. Others that lived 2 miles from Central and were zoned for Glen Oaks. Most just used a relative's address though

It was clearly on the path to crapola prior to Katrina. How many lower class people stayed in BR instead of returning to N.O.?

Not as many as people think. The population was only slightly higher in 2010 than 2000.
