On top of that, gas used for non-driving purposes (boats, lawn mowers, etc) would theoretically cost less. This might not be the worst thing ever.
This would make a few things a lot easier for businesses. Right now I have a person that half of their job is tracking gas and diesel used off-road to file for tax recovery. On top of that I live in fear of some dumbass putting red diesel in a truck on accident.

You can file a refund for those taxes if you really care, or just use dyed diesel. Unless you're buying a ton of it, you won't save too much. Sales tax takes most of the "savings".

The infrastructure has to be paid for somehow.
What are the OT suggestions on paying for new and upkeep for our roads, bridges and highways?
Oh, I don't know... How about one of these multi-trillion dollar bills full of pork our congress are cranking out lately?
Or, when is the last time you checked our budget for the fedgov? Surely there's plenty of useless money being spent there that could be used for the betterment of society as a whole... you know, that money they already collect from us in numerous ways.
I don't know why so many people assume that our government has to make new inroads on making money to pay for new things, let alone new money to pay for upkeep on things that already exist. We could cut 10% from the budget of every useless and redundant government agency out there and pay for every infrastructure need we have.
But noooooo, let's just find new ways to tax the hard working citizens while continuing to grow the federal government overlords

We usually get a couple hundred grand back a year. But we’re obviously an outlier.

replacing the gas tax
There will be no "replacing" the gas tax. This tax will just be put on top of the existing ones.
As I said earlier, government does not give up revenue streams. Ever.

This actually a voluntary program for federal grants. Most people didn't read the actual story.

Jesus. You're either using just shite tons of gas, or live in a state with no sales tax.

The gas tax is woefully behind the times since gas mileage has increased so much and the tax hasn't been increased in a long time (because it's been politically unpopular) and our infrastructure is old and falling apart.
I think that this would
A) fairly tax EVs
B) increase revenue for DOTDs, assuming the money actually gets distributed, which should help with maintenance of our roads.

And it's also a pilot program. Do you understand why pilot programs exist?

We use a shite ton of gas and diesel across 40 states(intrastate, almost never inter except when we’re mob or demobing a special project). Our fleet is over 5,000 on and off road assets.

Is anyone looking out for America? We are already taxed into debt now they want to tax every mile we drive. #resist.

But it won't. EV's will be taxed by the mileage tax only. ICB vehicles would be taxed by it *and* the existing gas tax, which most certainly will not go away.

The lobby engine is already getting spun up to make sure anything like this is a replacement, not and add-on. It would be crippling to any industry with vehicles. So the big boys are already working on it. Remember that Amazon would probably be one of the most negatively impacted companies in the country so they’ll start throwing their weight around if this gets stupid. I’m hopeful that works or it would suck balls.

Makes sense. If you hit Louisiana in the early 2010's I probably sent ya a check ha.
Posted on 8/10/21 at 7:07 pm to Centinel
True, but they're incentivizing EVs, so I wouldn't expect that to change.
EVs are the future anyway, so by the time this would ever become standard law, EVs will be more popular.

Typically it means payment in Lieu of Taxes. The wording in the article was unclear if it was a PILOT program or a new program.

I know nothing of this plan but honestly a mile tax would be more fair across the board than taxes on gas
So the taxes on gas aren't enough for you? Or road taxes?

And FedGov will toss Amazon a few billion in "taxpayer compensation" and they'll shut the frick up.
Government will never, ever give up a revenue stream.
