How bad was the fire at the crash site? Wondering if he got lost and was circling to get his bearings then realized he was running out of fuel.

What an arrogant piece of garbage. Killed his entire family so he could fly his helicopter to dinner. I feel for the parents of his wife. I can’t imagine what they are going through.

Ole boy has a picture of his helicopter as his cover photo on Facebook. In the comments, there’s an exchange between him and his mother in law and you can tell she low key thinks he’s a douche.

Just had a look at his FB. The guy has a video posted of him flying with his cousin who even says she went up with him the day he got his single license. He was completely reckless.

Yeah he got pretty low to the water there. Definitely seemed like a cowboy and his wife and child paid the ultimate price. I can totally see her family’s point of view.

What I don’t understand is can’t these helicopters slow down and fly vertically? As in if you are lost or disoriented why continue with forward speed? I understand that you can get screwed up at night, but if you are flying at night or in fog or low vis situations that seems like the very first thing you would want to learn to do and practice in a helicopter. You don’t have that option in a plane

There is absolutely NO place in aviation for showoffs.

Spatial disorientation?

Seems to be the case.
And being legal or student pilot still, can happen to anybody. Such a damn shame he made that decision.

I dont understand. If you're in trouble in a helicopter, why not just stop in place and hoover until you get you bearings etc?

Hovering isn’t like pulling over to the side of the road. It is one of the more difficult maneuvers to do and he was a pretty limited skill pilot.

When you have spatial disorientation you have no idea where you are, where you’re going, your altitude.

Again, it is an advanced/difficult maneuver. In aviation training you learn the basics first before you get into any advanced training. You don’t want to try anything you’re not proficient at. Flying above your skill level is how you crash and that’s exactly what he hid.

Given where we are and where we’re going with self-driving cars and computing power, I wonder how long it will be until the FAA mandates some sort of safety feature in these civilian helicopters where autopilot takes over to correct and stabilize you if you’re below 500 feet or so unless the pilot is actively engaging a switch to turn it off during a controlled landing.

Just seems like the computer and the technology are catching up to mitigate some of the dangers from this inexperienced and cowboy behavior

There are old pilots and there are bold pilots. But there are no old bold pilots.

It's going to have to catch up if we ever finally get flying cars

I simply hate reading about these types of accidents, even more so when the root cause is blind egocentric stupidity. It's just so mind boggling idiotic it's hard to fathom a decent explanation.

I read a lot of NTSB Aviation Accident reports from their website. Stupidity, hubris, and overconfidence kills a lot of pilots and passengers.

Maybe on new ones but like anything most tech is not forced on older models. Even the military is still flying 50 year old planes

“Aviation in itself is not inherently dangerous. But to an even greater degree than the sea, it is terribly unforgiving of any carelessness, incapacity or neglect.”

The NTSB report will tell all. The toxicology they do is amazing to read. Go read Roy Halladay's crash report for a good example and entertaining read.
