the key is to go in the off-season. we went in January with our two young girls. a good mix of hiking, snow, and a little fun.
yes its trashy. but kids love shite like that. so you tolerate it just for a little while.

Drove through there one time back in the Spring. Trashiest place Ive ever been and "The Panama City in the mountains" comments are 100% accurate.

Trashy is not an appropriate description. A tourist trap does not equal trashy. I find PF and Gatlinburg very clean and inviting. Trashy is when you have people pooping in the streets and strung out on drugs just walking around. You do not see any of that in PF or Gat.

The trashy we are referring to are the thousands of people who look like Honey Booboo walking around with 8 kids and cheesy commercialized tourist trap bullshite everywhere. Most of the people there look like the goblins you see walking around Walmart that crawl out from under the rock they live under a few times a year and live off disability. Fat middle aged biker women with nipple rings, tons of saggy faded tattoos, Jimmy Buffett tshirts, and some big tall daqueri in a plastic container walking around.
And young trashy girls that look like they smoke meth, drive a 2003 mustang with a pink Browning decal on the back, and have lived in a trailer for the majority of their lives.

Bitch I'm from a shithole town in North Mississippi and I'm surrounded by trash all of the time. I'm not spending my hard earned money to take a vacation to a place that's Mississippi trash on steroids.

I don't think anyone has been to a car show weekend. You'd have clutched your pearls so tightly, you lose your voice for several months.
Just tens of thousands of folks who have restored, remodeled, and otherwise worked on their cars for their own pleasures. Some are selling those cars, but many are just there to share and enjoy.
You'll notice it's about to happen as older beautifully maintained cars start being parked to face the Pigeon Forge Parkway. Those are the prime parking places.
Cruising slowly up and down the strip would cause meltdowns if you can't get into that stuff.
