A detail from the original psychedelic poster for Billy Jack (1971)

The film flopped, but was rereleased in 1973 w/an ad campaign deemphasizing hippies and stressing martial arts arse kicking; it became a surprise hit.

"My Mother the Car" was a surprisingly well-made show, in terms of its production. It 'looks' great, visually. A lot of effort was put into it. The cast is also good.

Yet it completely fails as a sitcom, because of a few fatal flaws. The whole premise doesn't make sense. How is Jerry Van Dyke's 'mother' reincarnated as a car? An old car that nevertheless would have already existed and been built when she would have still been alive? Van Dyke turns on the car radio (which automobiles of that vintage would NOT have had), and hears his mother's voice and talks to her? I tend to like surreal humor, but this was just dumb. The series' other fatal flaw? Well, it frankly just wasn't all that funny, either.

Go to Burning Man, Bonnaroo, Voodoo Fest-- any of those-- and you'll swear they were only about 70 years off.

And that chick will NOT be smoking tobacco in that pipe...
