“Three year-old Robert Quigley smoking a cigar, Washington DC, 30th Aug 1928. Quigley apparently started smoking when, as a one year-old on his father's knee, he grabbed his father's pipe and tried smoking it. The boy is also said to drink alcohol & chew tobacco.”

It was common for girls to be married by 15-16 years old, oftentimes to men older, sometimes much older, than they were. The reason for this was, before a father would allow his daughter to marry, he required the suitor to be able to demonstrate the ability to provide for his daughter. At that time this usually meant marrying an older male who already had had his own land and home. As for these older males, they sought younger females who were strong and had many childbearing years left.
Also the reason you had so many Confederate widows and sons of Confederate veterans that lived many, many, many years after Appomattox.
Young girls were married of to (much) older former soldiers because their pension, as measly as it was, was guaranteed income in a south that was still reeling from the effects of the war and Reconstruction.

From The Great Cookoff episode (November 13, 1968)
Jethro Bodine : [Jethro is wearing an ancient Roman uniform] She'll really go for me in this. This is what the emperor hisself wears.
Jane Hathaway : Caesar?
Jethro Bodine : Not yet, but I figured to hold hands with her tonight.
Jethro Bodine : [Mr. Drysdale comes out of his office] Hail, Mr. Drysdale.
Jethro Bodine : Hail, Jethro. Hail? What's going on? What's this getup for?
Jethro Bodine : It's so I can make a hit with that beautiful Italian cook.
Jane Hathaway : She'll see him as the noblest Roman of them all.
Milburn Drysdale : Caesar?
Jane Hathaway : Not yet, but he plans to hold hands with her tonight.
Milburn Drysdale : When will I learn to stay in my own office and keep the door closed?
Jethro Bodine : Hi Elly, how do I look?
[Jethro is wearing a gladiator outfit]
Elly May Clampett : You look like a big dumb nut.

Great lord, 12ish year old me was hopelessly in love with Emma Peel in the early 70's. Thank you WCOV for your strong rerun and weekend alternative programming.#Tarzan
