That is SPEED! Available to all manner of military in different countries in the 1940’s. Doctors would give it to their regular patients on a sort of one off basis if you had to drive on a long trip, stay awake all night, or keep especially alert in the 1950’s and 1960’s. The first cut was insanely overlong and didn't work. Editor Ralph Rosenblum decided to cut everything not dealing with the Annie Hall character, making it a film about his relationship with her.
Allen saw Rosenblum's cut and approved it, changing the title to Annie Hall to better fit it
