Bridge of Sighs in Venice, Italy, c. 1900

quote:
The view from the Bridge of Sighs was the last view of Venice that convicts saw before their imprisonment. The bridge's English name was bestowed by Lord Byron in the 19th century as a translation from the Italian "Ponte dei sospiri", from the suggestion that prisoners would sigh at their final view of beautiful Venice through the window before being taken down to their cells.

The incident occurred on March 19, 1942, in Brooklyn, when Egbert, a 50-year-old woman, had an emotional breakdown and climbed onto the ledge of her second-story apartment building at 497 Dean Street.

As she stood on the narrow ledge, gripping a drainpipe, police officers and neighbors attempted to talk her down.

Damn, does that bring back memories.
An uncle (who was only 7 years older than me) had ALL of those paperbacks in his room in the mid 1970s, and I liked to look at the covers and synopses when I visited my grandparents. He was in high school and then college around that time, and was a voracious reader. I once realized that his favorite book series all rhymed: Conan, Perry Rhodan (sci-fi), and Mack Bolan.
My uncle later became a high school teacher and coach, and then later an administrator in the Plaquemines Parish school system. Unfortunately, he died very young, right after Katrina before he turned 50.
One thing I remember about those books was almost all of them included a place name: Vegas Vendetta, Detroit Deathwatch, Colorado Kill Zone, Boston Blitz, etc. The one book I actually read was the one for Atlanta, which came out around the time of the CB- Smokey and the Bandit craze entitled "Dixie Convoy".
Pretty sure Marvel Comics' "The Punisher" was a complete rip-off of "The Executioner".

Brooklyn. Just a few blocks from where we lived as a toddler.
