If I might be entirely too nosey what line of work are you in? The only town I can think of thats even "decent" sized in Garden is Oshkosh and there isn't much there except that cabelas center.

Currently live in NYC. For those of you who've listed it and haven't lived here: don't. I fricking love my job, and I make a great living here in an industry where I couldn't be as successful elsewhere, but NYC is garbage. The majority of the people here are legitimate and unrepentant assholes; the weather blows 7-8 months a year; public transportation means it takes forever to get anywhere (and I live in the city); it's dirty and smells like shite everywhere; and for all of this, you get the added bonus of paying at least $3500 a month to rent a decent 1BR apartment (for comparison's sake, I had a better apartment in BR when I lived down there for under a grand).
If you want a similar setting with better people, better vibe, and cheaper cost of living, go to Chicago. I'd also toss a vote in for SF and Austin.

I would never live in the burbs of a city like Atlanta (i've been in town here for over 15 years), but in cool mountain/beach areas, get me away from folk.

Have you ever been at the cross section of 512 and I-5 anytime between 0700-1000 or 1600-1900? That area of town blows. In fact I hate Tacoma so much because I have to pass through it to get to Seattle and I have to plan my 45 minute trip around their traffic so it doesn't turn into a 2 hour trip. I've lived in a place with less than 1,000 POP. and a city over 1.5 Million POP.
My favorite places to live are Springfield, MO and Columbia, MO. Both are mid-sized college towns which are regional hubs for medical care, entertainment, and dining. Springfield wins because of the airport.
Small town living sucks if your family isn't from that town, and largely sucks even if they are. Gossip - frick that.
Large cities have traffic, crime, bums, and rude fricking people who are sick of other rude fricking people all the time - usually a bunch of liberals too.
