The biggest thing for me is there are 1,000s upon 1,000s of auto, home, ect DIY web sites and forums with how to threads that no longer have pics.

Who would ever spend $400 on photobucket? I have a professional level photography site with a ton of features for 1/4 that at zenfolio, and there are tons of others.

This. $400 a year is laughable. Adobe Creative Suite ala Photoshop, etc. is $600 and that is actual programs you use.
What's next, yahoo mail going to announce $500/ year when Gmail remains free? LOL

I foresee Facebook doing this in the near future. It's been around long enough that enough people store their lives in pictures on the site. It's almost a guarantee that at some point FB will hold users' photos for ransom.
