This. Act like you have the job (without being cocky). The best interviews I have done are when the candidate is asking me good questions about the company and job.

Act like they recruited you specifically for this job. Remember they need you for this job as much (more) than you need a job

Those are usually pretty straightforward.

Be honest, confident, and friendly. The next step is to have you there in person. They are just making sure there aren’t any red flags.

Think of it this way: You have the job. Ask relevant questions. Make sure they are a good fit for you. Let them sell the position to you.

The best interview I had is when I was convinced that some aspects of the position wasn’t right for me. I was honest with my concern. They spent a lot of time telling me how perfect of a fit I would be there.

It’s no one’s last hope unless you insist on working at Sears/K Mart. In this strong economy, it’s likely that the issues you are having could be related to a regional or local downturn in that particular industry. Hopefully you are willing to relocate.

Or perhaps you just need a little practice with interviews. Call a former colleague or friend and see if they are willing to do a mock interview with you.

Someone who knew their stuff gave me this advice:

1) If they hire you, it will be because THEY NEED YOU more than you need them.
2) Be polite, on time, and professional.
3) Organize and type up a list of the 5 or so points YOU want to be sure to cover. Don't rely on memory.
4) At the end, don't linger. Thank them nicely, and hang up politely.

I spoke to family friends at two different companies there, and the professional salaries they were getting were no higher than anywhere else

Good luck.

I much as I like time off from work and can never get enough, being laid off is depressing as hell. I thought I would enjoy not working for a few months but with no income it's hard to enjoy hanging around the house.

There is some good advise here. To reiterate what I've heard in the past, dress like you would if it were an in person interview and if you usually gesture with your hands when you talk make sure you have room to do that. You will come across differently speaking hunched over the phone than heads up, shoulders back and hands moving as they normally would.

So with this I'd think you'd do better in a quiet place and a speakerphone than holding the phone/receiver up to your ear.

Speak clearly, use the right tenses, if your normal speech pattern includes the words "Like, you know" ditch them.

Sometime people like to sound educated by tossing out what I call $10 words. If you do this, just make sure they are the right words or the person on the other end may wind up wondering what the hell you are trying to say.

FIFY. The Bakken is dying for labor right now. Good rates and if you're on a crew, good per diem and travel too. The winter is brutal, but you'll make some jingle in your pocket.

Make sure you write down some questions to ask them. It shows interest in the job and that you have done your homework on the company.

I always noticed that if the interviewer made a mistake (stuttered, lost train of thought, etc) then I was much more confident and comfortable. May be something to keep in the back of your mind. Remember they are human and likely just weeding out bad applicants.

I’ve got some questions. One about personal career development at the company, one about the company’s strategy going forward, and I’m still uncertain about a final one. I did like the suggestions I got in here about someone who was successful in the position. I also like the one asking what the top three qualities they’re looking for in a candidate, but I’m unsure how that would come off
