Interesting topic. The Baby Boomer generation loves meetings. I mean, they fricking love it. We've got a diverse age group in our hunting club and the older guys want to meet "like men and discuss things". The younger guys just say "let me know what yall come up with for rules and I can give my vote over the phone". It just becomes a clash of wills.

Personally, I like email. I can think about what we're talking about and give you a solid answer.

Email is fine as long as the other party is modestly quick to respond. I work in logistics where things are often quite time sensitive, nothing pisses me off more than someone who refuses to put a phone number on their email signature and I have to email them and wait sometimes hours to get a response for something that could've been solved with a 30 second phone call. This has really become a problem in the WFH age where I know they're likely dicking off and not paying attention.

Likewise, I hate when someone attempts to email me something, usually after hours, that too is time sensitive and they refuse to bother calling me or sending an email to our group email address for the on-call person to handle. Then want to get pissed when I don't see it until the next day.

Depends on the nature of the comms needed.

most daily routine stuff, scheduling, minor order/directions. email is preferred

if i have a critical issue that needs fixing right away, you're getting a phone call.

quote:

- Email outlining issue/discussion/whatever, inviting a scheduled call

- Calendared call to discuss the email, if needed.

This, all day long. Stop with the unscheduled calls, meetings, walk ups to my desk to go squat in a conference room about who knows what, etc.

I call and leave a VM message if not available
Then follow-up with a short email to Cover My AZZ

In my profession, you have to document, document, document otherwise there is no proof of a contact or missed attempt.

The worst of the worst: The short/no notice teams call request

"Can you hop on a Teams call real quick?"

"No, unless by "real quick" you mean at 3:15 on Monday"

Email first. I want documentation of replies, shared documents, etc. Phone calls are only necessary if there is a need for immediacy or if we need a quick back and forth. Even then, most chat or text is fine.

I’m a corporate lawyer and spend most of my time heads down on drafting, researching issues, running down internal approvals from other executives etc., so I greatly prefer emails/messages I can respond to as my workflow allows rather than sitting on pointless calls.

In my line of work, I find most calls to be largely performative. Usually sales trying to pressure the client and be obnoxious, which really fricks up the flow of my day. It’s also difficult to do good solid legal work like contract drafting live on a Teams/Zoom call. For whatever reason, sales is always aggressively horny about setting meetings and it’s reaching a boiling point at my current job.

I like when you offer a future day/time with maybe a bit of info (because you know damn well what they want to know anyway), and miraculously, they don't need a call anymore or never reply trying to schedule.

It's like... yes.. it could be this easy. We don't have to look at each other on Zoom for every brief question.

Contact my administrative assistant. If warranted, I'll return your call or email.
