I believe he learned bass when he joined the band. He played the hell out of it.

Morning Dew is such a haunting song when you know the backstory.

quote:

Walk me out in the morning dew my honey,
Walk me out in the morning dew today.
I can't walk you out in the morning dew my honey,
I can't walk you out in the morning dew today.

I thought I heard a baby cry this morning,
I thought I heard a baby cry today.
You didn't hear no baby cry this morning,
You didn't hear no baby cry today.

Where have all the people gone my honey,
Where have all the people gone today.
There's no need for you to be worrying about all those people,
You never see those people anyway.

I thought I heard a young man morn this morning,
I thought I heard a young man morn today.
I thought I heard a young man morn this morning,
I can't walk you out in the morning dew today.

Walk me out in the morning dew my honey,
Walk me out in the morning dew today.
I'll walk you out in the morning dew my honey,
I guess it doesn't really matter anyway,
I guess it doesn't matter anyway,
I guess it doesn't matter anyway,
Guess it doesn't matter anyway.

I still sing it "moan" instead of "morn".

Lesh was talked into becoming the bassist for Garcia's new rock band (then known as The Warlocks) in the fall of 1964. This was an unexpected turn of events, as Lesh had never before played bass. According to Lesh, the first song he rehearsed with the band was "I Know You Rider".[2] He joined them for their third or fourth gig (memories vary) and stayed until the end.
He was 24 when he started playing bass. No one played like him ...before him.

He was a true warrior of music. I think my favorite things he’s said was quoted by Warren Haynes today “the music is always there. We just tap into it”

Now his mighty melody will ring down from the sky…

That was the Dead......a bass player who couldn't play bass, a lead songwriter/lyricist who didn't want to play anything, a bunch of guys who liked and wanted to play every kind of music there was, and a drummer/keyboardist/harmonica player with a surprising blues voice.
