Pepperidge Farm is recalling four varieties of its Goldfish crackers after learning of a possible salmonella contamination.

Their whey powder provider notified them about the contamination. “Pepperidge Farm initiated an investigation and, out of an abundance of caution, is voluntarily recalling four varieties of Goldfish crackers," the company said in a press release.

The contamination impacts four varieties of crackers: Flavor Blasted® Xtra Cheddar Flavor Blasted® Sour Cream & Onion Goldfish® Baked with Whole Grain Xtra Cheddar Goldfish® Mix Xtra Cheddar + Pretzel The product has been distributed across the United States, but no illnesses have been reported.

In the possible misunderstanding that baking kills Salmonella, all that's left is that the questionable dehydrated whey is a carrier of both the flavors added to the surface of the crackers after a very short baking and that the salmonella in the whey wasn't killed either by the short baking time if it were in the crackers or by dusting onto the cooked gold fish if that's where it was used.

Growth conditions:
Temperature range: 6-46 oC (43-115 oF)
Optimum Temperature: 37oC (98.6oF)
pH range: 4.1-9.0
Optimum pH: 6.5 - 7.5

numbers from a .edu site so may have some credibility. It's bad that our optimum temperature is also Salmonella's.

not all GF are affected...just certain production runs of products containing Extra Cheddar GF

you just need to read the code on the bag or box

LINK to dates and UPC's affected

RU= Richmond Utah
WO= Willard Ohio

Fortunately the Dallas distribution center hasn't shipped any through distribution channels in the New Orleans and Baton Rouge area that I have heard of.

But Check what you have to be sure.

Also any affected product in our area (if any) should be off the shelves already.
