Tipping really should be done away with. Not because of some social justice, living wage thing but because it's pretty useless now. My fiance and I went to dinner last night, and the waitress was absolutely tterrible. Sweet but just awful at her job. It was busy when we first got there, so we attributed her lack of attention to that. But it cleared out fairly quickly, and she still disappeared for large chunks of time. She kept bringing the wrong stuff and didn't bring the drink he ordered until we were done eating and dropped it off with the check. Anyway, he's always a generous tipper, but he left her a little less than he normally would because of the poor service. And we discussed how tipping is kind of useless now because service industry people expect it. You're supposed to be able to send a message to the server on performance with the amount you leave. Great service means a generous tip, poor service means less. But, now they just assume you're cheap if you leave less. It's more of a reflection on the patron than the server because of the expectation.

I always tip. If service is terrible I'll give probably 10%. Worked as a waiter and bar tender while in school, so I have a soft spot for people in the service industry. If I get great service I normally tip very well.

What part of that said we left nothing? We never don't tip. But tipping less than 20% doesn't send the message that the service sucked anymore. People just think you're cheap.
FWIW, 10% is too low for even poor service IMO.

I hate how even when I go to plate lunch places where there are no servers they still have a place to tip. What am I tipping for? Just like to go orders from restaurants.

I agree with that. We got the kids some yogurt a couple of weeks ago and the place is self serve. You put all the toppings on and everything. The only thing the workers do is ring it up. But there is a tip jar at the counter. Granted, it's not necessary to tip but I wondered why even have it since the customer does all the work.

Ok, here is my little rant I guess...
When I bring my truck to get washed at the local carwash, I make sure I put a tip in the big metal box for the people actually doing the work. Not a problem. The problem is, there is a tip jar next to the register that says, "tips for the cashier." I mean, who does that. You're doing nothing other than eating, texting, talking, and just taking my money.

As a former waiter and bartender and now a good tipper.....if you can't tip drink your mich ultra's and cheap wine at home. Make room for the ppl who are decent humans or that can afford it.

I usually tip at a bar but I've always wondered why I do when I'm paying for you to just grab me a 5 dollar beer out of a cooler

I get tips for repair work, but I own the company and feel horrible and generally try and refuse.
Now I just take it and put it in my lunch fund and use that money to take people out to lunch.
Then I tip great. you have to piss me off to get less than 20%.
I also use the tax when figuring out the tip. Some tip pretax percentage.,

I bartend , and I don't care when people don't tip me. and I've gone on extensive rants about the stupidity of the tipping system (but I'll gladly reap the benefits of it of course)
But at the same time, don't expect the extra mile if you don't tip.
I used to have a guy that ran up bartabs over 150 bucks and would tip 2 dollar. Which is fine, but don't start acting an arse whenever I don't come to you first or act like you're some kind of big shot because of your bar tab, when in fact I really don't give a shite about your 2 bucks

Not my job anymore. But I must have been so bad at it they made me the manager of the bar and I increased the profits two fold over the course of the year. Most people tip well and are courteous. A select few are trash and if/how they get served was of little concern to me our volume was so high. I miss the bar business.

I'm a pity tipper. I don't really tip based on service. I just feel sorry for the poor bastards, so I give them money.
