Common sense and intelligence don't always go hand in hand. That is kind of the premise of the "Big Bang Theory."

Hire former military

I'm sure this doesn't apply to most former military but EVERY former military person I've worked with have been terrible employees and absolutely terrible at their jobs.

And they have it made too. They are well paid and almost unfireable.

Damn shame because I'm sure most out there are better representatives of the military than what I've dealt with.

Look at their MOS/job title. Generally, the military will give you a job based on your intelligence/ASVAB score. You very rarely get the job you request

If someone was a grunt (however some are intelligent and choose to still become grunts), truck driver, supply then you’re taking a risk. If someone was a combat engineer, intelligence, logistics, etc then you’re going to get a quality employee.

Please don’t consider national guard as military either. They will take anyone. Unless they deployed during OIF/OEF, then that’s not real military.

Test taking skills does not equate to intelligence or life skills.

Some of the most highly educated in one area seem to have tunnel vision.

I kind of think you have to be on the spectrum to tolerate that much of one subject.

This.

I’m friends with a highly respected mathematician who works at a prominent university.

You would have thought I was talking to someone with Down syndrome when he was giving me directions to his house.

He used to have me look over simple pieces of writing like emails if they had any importance. His communication skills appeared to come from an archaic robot prototype.

We had a millennial "genius" working for us as a summer employee. He would have to google "how to wipe your arse after shitting" before he went to the bathroom. No common sense whatsoever.

I'm not calling you a liar, but you ever think these kids are just nervous or not trying to frick up considering they're trying to earn full time employment?

Afraid to say I've know my share of folks who are book smart geniuses and common sense idiots.

It's always perplexed me how some of them can know so much about so many things but can't do shite for themselves in the real world.

If you qualify for a spot and are willing to wait until it ships, you get what you want.

I don't think this is a good guideline at all. Good and bad is in every MOS.

My advice to anyone hiring former military is to look at what's on the resume but don't worry too much about it. Ask why they left, get to know them a little bit and get a read on them as a person. Military is too different from the civilian world to do a standard interview. I know people that were studs in the military and suck in the civilian world. I also know people kicked out of the military and are all-stars in the civilian world.

Graduate Degrees outside STEM are mostly just a bunch of fluff and mean jack shite.

Does she have prior work experience? Or just a bunch of school work?

It's all about real world experience...and existing in the real world. None of that higher education crap is worth a damn, if you can't actually use it around the working class. I mean, I guess they can teach.......maybe.

I'm guessing you graduated from the "School of Hard Knocks."

She’s likely more so studious rather than book smart/intelligent.

Some people can put in enough time studying to make the grade, but can’t apply knowledge for the life of them.
