It's a personal insult and should not be taken lightly.

Most people I know salt and pepper their food out of habit. I never put salt on anything so my taste buds are still sensitive to salt. Bacon is at my limit for saltiness.

My ex-MIL would dump a tablespoon of salt on McDonald's French fries that were (obviously) already salted.

A tip for those doing dinner interviews: Do not add salt/pepper before tasting your food.

My mom was a recruiter for 30 years. She loved to meet candidates for lunch the first time. That very tendency tells a lot about the person. Typically they are presumptuous and not very flexible people.

Pretty much this. I've had people tell me they don't need to add anything when they eat my cooking. I think it's the best compliment a chef can get.

I remember when they interviewed Willie Mae and she said she didn't like Obama because he at at the Scotch House and put hot sauce in her Gumbo.

I'm my biggest cooking critic, so if I think it needs something, I add it before anyone tries it. I couldn't care less how someone takes their food, so if you want to add something, have at it. I've never cooked for someone and have them decline the next time, so if they're happy, I'm happy. I always ask if it could use anything, but more often than not they're fine with it. Can't tell you how many times I've cooked wild game for people who "hate" wild meat and have them love it. If your game tastes wild, you're not cooking it right.

My dad does this and it bothers me to no end. I'm not even talking about my cooking. Every single time he eats something that he didn't make, before he ever tastes the food he puts an atrocious amount of salt and pepper on it. I just don't understand. You haven't even tasted the food how do you know it isn't already properly seasoned?

An example that really perplexes me:

$40 steak at the nicest place in town? At least 5-7 shakes each of salt and pepper before he even takes a bite.

do you actually like the taste of Tabasco? or are you just trying to make things "spicy" so you can pretend to be cajun?

Why do you care how people want their food?

because those ppl dont even know what the food taste like yet, it may be EXACTLY how they would like it so why add something before tasting?

would be like test driving a brand new vehicle and wanting to change the tires before ever driving it the way it is

If it's a restaurant that I've visited a bunch of times, I know what to expect. They're not going to miraculously stop preparing bland food.

Why do you keep going back to a restaurant that prepares bland food?
