I worked at sonic in the early 00's and the carhops got servers wages and relied on tips. That's why I always go through the drive through, I'm not tipping for fast food.

Haha. Fatty wants us to tip so his coney dog doesn't go up $0.25.

Yes, it is true. Minimum wage is law. If they don't make minimum wage in tips, The employer makes up the difference.

A friend's daughter works for Sonic. They pay $4/hour normally, but if you skate, they'll pay $5/ hour. Her location is busy and in a good area. She averages $15/hour AFTER tips on a regular basis.

And if they don't make minimum wage the owner makes up for the difference, I guess it sucks for you to own a Sonic.

My son's girlfriend, in 2001, was averaging almost $22 an hour at Sonic with tips.

I don't care enough to research it. I still won't believe it until someone shows me a sonic paystub. There's no reason for them to pay their employees like servers. No one would work there.

I agree with you 100%. If the OP's buddies really made less than minimum wage then I would make a call to the wage board and issue a formal complaint against the owner. Fast food workers aren't waiters, they are regular employees.

And you cant teach dumazzes not to dumazz. Your whole premise is full of crap. They have to make at least minimum wage...period.

carhops make under minimum wage. I know several people who have worked there in the past. The carhops said they made about $4 an hour and the rest of their income came from tips. People shouldn't go there if they're not going to treat the carhops right. Stop being a cheap arse and let them keep a little change.

I tip almost everytime I go to Sonic. I don't like being told what to do though so I'm not going to tip the next few times.

Sonic was my first job. I got paid minimum wage. People tipped, but not anywhere near everyone---it was NOT expected. I made $20-$30 a shift.. closer to $20. I was 16, so my shift was 4 hours with a 30 minute break. So $20 plus my $7.75 an hour wasn't bad.

I tend to avoid sonic because I never carry cash, but sometimes I just say frick it. I hate to not tip (because I'm insane and tip everyone), but they don't have an option to tip when you use a card.. which most people use.

Back when I worked there, you could tip on the card. Not anymore.
