The more value a creature has for humans by being alive, the better they are treated. This goes for animals and people

Is that why cats allow us to serve them?

I agree with your sentiments. It's all nonsense, really.

Cats are different. They get a pass because no one wants to eat hairy pussy.

Dogs offer unconditional love and affection. Guys just want to get in your pants.

Guy dogs would unconditionally love to get affectionate in your pants. I saw what they did to poor Mr. Bear. By the time it was over his eyes had popped off and they'd humped the stuffing out of him.

Chinese people can eat whatever they want, but that gif of the frog that is cut open and moving around on the dinner plate gives me goose bumps

I think that was Japan.
And that reminded me of this guy

It's just cultural. People look at you funny if you're eating an 18'' philly cheesesteak with a beer in the morning also.
Dogs are largely domesticated in Western culture, thus greater attachment exists with life and death issues. People care more about something horrific occurring to a child in their neighborhood than in Central America because it hits home. It's that simple.

my brief take...
the cats/dogs versus other animals debate boils down to the fact that for a lot of folks these animals become another member of the family vs some animal that the individual has no knowledge or attachment to.
it's like asking why do people mourn a passed love one, but not bust in to tears while reading the obituaries in the paper

I've eaten bobcat before. It wasn't too bad. Mixed it with some rabbit.
Called it Pussy-Hare Stew.
