re: People in which profession have the most hubris about their line of work?

The reason I ask is, how do I know if the guy like in this video who was ever in a dangerous situation in combat? What if the guy was in the military, but was a cook or a tech guy or a mechanic who never ventured outside of base? While I agree that people who put their lives in danger deserve credit, not everyone who has served in the military fit that bill, right? Just because someone is in uniform, you can't assume somehow they are better than civilians and deserve a thanks for their 'service'? My question is this: Is there a way to easily tell or ask a question of somebody that served to find out if they actually risked their life for this country?
I view it differently, even if they were a cook, mechanic, or some type desk jockey, they signed up knowing there was no guarantee that at any given time something could happen that puts their life on the line, that in itself is worth a little respect. There were recently two cases where a couple of guys had cush desk jobs in the states and 24 hours later were right in the middle a SEAL team mission because they had language skills that were needed.

if they sign up, they are at risk of being called regardless of their MOS so they deserve respect for being willing to put their life on the line.
they are there in case. not what have they done to earn your respect.
its also the foundation of this countrys security.

I would say that sports officials have a l it of hubris with them. At least the two I know. One is baseball and
One is football. The football one is a pain to watch a game with. He comments on almost every play about something.

I wouldn't really say the military is a job. It's basically welfare for those who can't get real jobs.
I'd put my CV and education up against yours every day and twice on Sunday and not even think twice about it. Want to go?

Investment bankers.
Probably the worst
I'll say this about them, though: the vast majority who have been in for five years or more have learned a lot of humility and generally tend to be blase about it. They realize that their lives kind of suck and that they work all the damn time for arsehole clients.
It's the early- and mid-20's IB set that are real douches. They have far more money than they know what to do with (and a lot more money than their peers), and they don't really know how to handle themselves.

Rebman601 is ridiculed on every board he/she posts. Very pretentious, probably a teen.

I think you're right. The first page of his history is nothing but shitty trolls.

Didn't make it through the whole thread, but many of you (not Barrister) are a little off the mark with the interpretation of hubris - yes it has to do with arrogance and self importance, but hubris involves arrogance that leads to one's downfall. Think Hitler invading Russia... Or that guy at Moe's that might not say welcome to Moe's in just the right tone.
It's been a long time since I took my SATs - makes me a little happy to get to use one of those 100$ SAT words...

Got to go with the military, right? I can't think of any other profession where people are so proud of their jobs even after they are long retired. This post was edited on 4/26 at 6:04 pm
Don't they earn that right?

I deal with doctors everyday and that's my answer.
I've met some neurosurgeons that have God complexes you wouldn't believe too.

Unfortunately, these seem to be the vocal minority. So I understand how some people can be somewhat irked. However anyone with a brain should know this is not every Vet
I don't give a shite what their motivations were for signing up. As long as they served honorably they're all right with me. Everyone signs the dotted line. People have to be following some deep "calling" to be worthy of your respect?

ETA: And my Vet friends would say this even more vehemently then I would

That wouldn't be serving honorably. Read my post again.

Friend of mine is a hospitality consultant and has worked with some of the best hotels in the world. He said once that the truly rich (wealthy) are some of the very nicest people. They have high standards so of course can be demanding, but are usually generous and courteous. He said the worst are those who think they are rich by professional attainment such as some doctors, lawyers, actors, musicians are the worst. Pretentious, demanding and insulting. While the truly rich prefer anonymity, the wannabe rich or those with just enough money to flaunt it have to make it known who they are when no one really cares.
Kids of the truly rich fall into the latter category of behavior as well.
