Who are these people that like to go to weddings?

This exactly. I'm getting married in about a month and have had no similar issues as op. My solution to his problem, don't tell people you don't want to invite.
I kiiiinda agree with you as a means to stop any awkwardness, but I hate that it's the norm today. You should be allowed to let people know that you're engaged and not have them expect anything.
Why do people clamor for wedding invites so badly anyway? Ugh.

Your cousin is a huge dick for putting that on you. You should guilt him right back.

"Cousin. Tell '8 year old': I'm really sorry. But her cousin and his future bride are paying for the wedding themselves and have to keep the guest list limited. And that her father is a piece of shite for using her to guilt trip his cousin because he's too much of a cheap arse to pay for a babysitter. See you at Thanksgiving sweetheart"

I never understood the wedding hate. I love going to weddings. If you're attending boring weddings that you dread going to, either get better friends or don't go...

I wish people would ask me not to bring my kids to their wedding. It would give me an excuse to spend my weekend somewhere fun with my kids, like at my camp, instead of wasting the weekend going to some dumbass wedding.

You let that one kid go, it opens the floodgate, then your paying for 15 more meals
Oh yeah.. We wrote down a list of all the kids, and my side of the family was 23 kids below 13, and my SO was another 10-12..

I’m not paying to feed and entertain 40 children..
Reception facilities should allow discounts on kids.
Kids are $8 a head versus $28 for adults.
Kids get lil smokies, mac n cheese, and juice boxes.

It starts as pleasant conversation...when is the date? where are yall having it? Then BAM...OH CAN'T WAIT!!!!
"We're planning to keep it as a small wedding with mostly just family"
Problem solved

Then today when catching up with one of her acquaintances that she felt obligated to invite, my fiance asked if she was coming and if she had a PLUS 1... She replied yes and that she would be bringing her fricking kids. First off, we said plus 1 not bring your damn family.
Invitations that say "ADULTS ONLY RECEPTION". Circle it with a Sharpie for this particular broad's invite.

Some would call it rather rude to go around bragging about your party to folks with no intention of inviting them.
This.
What’s the harm in inviting them? 9/10 aren’t coming anyway.
Otherwise, if you plan on keeping it small, keep it to yourself.

the only way out of this is to be firm with people.
yup...which I'm cool with, but she really doesn't like being firm with people she knows so it's made her really uncomfortable. It just blows my mind how many people think this is about them and their fun. Like I said...it's really revealed who the trash in our lives are.

Welllll in the south, most women still want one before the other.

Exactly! I will go if I receive an invite out of respect and courtesy but will not go out of my way to ask a date/time then say "can't wait". If we don't receive the old fashioned mail invite, there is a reason, no harm no foul.

That's why you get married without inviting anybody.
Never saw the point in spending thousands of dollars on one day so people can act stupid the whole time.

After we told one couple they could bring their kids, we told a few others as well that we knew might have trouble planning logistics of not bringing their kids.
Response: "frick no we're not bringing our kids, why would we do that?"

MEEE! I love weddings b/c I'm a big gay faq and think they're all sappy and sweet and shite.
I like chick flicks too though... so there's that.

Yep, I made it through mine. Don’t really give a frick about anyone else’s. I’d rather spend my weekend fishing, playing golf, or just sitting on my porch drinking beer and cooking something.

yup.
our wedding was great. kept it under $15k and still had a photographer, videographer, dj, catered reception, and around 100 people.
BUT, if i had to do it again. I'd go to the courthouse and spend that $15k on us. I bet my wife would say the same thing. Or at least do a destination wedding so we could be in paradise and only a small number of people would actually attend.
