So stick to attacking extrapolation and ignore the part where I then referenced an actual quote speaking of a house that is 30,000 sq ft. Solid move
that is from the exact same website that your WSJ article links to.

Wasn't there just a long thread on the OT about dentists over diagnosing cavities? I'm thinking we haven't seen the worst of it yet!!

Does anyone know what was on that land before the Pennington house was built, and who owned it?

I'm thinking this thread would be even more awesome if it somehow merged with the swinging thread and it was revealed the house would be used for "parties".
Then we could debate the annual cost of condoms.

shite, I know this couple and saw them eating at Carraba's a month ago. I don't know what that means, but if I hurry, maybe they will hire me as groundskeeper and I could afford to eat at Carraba's more often.

I recently heard from a pretty reliable source that the maintenance and upkeep runs around $500K/year. Do dentists really make that kind of bank?

They're probably thinking they can flip the house a few years from now for 10mil.

Someone is building a massive house like that in my area. It's probably not as massive as the Pennington place, but it's at least two or three times the size of the already massive houses in its immediate area.
I don't understand why you'd build a 20,000 square foot home in a neighborhood where houses go for maybe $1-2 million. If they ever sell, that place will sit on the market for a long time.
Maybe if it were on a beach or near New York City, there would be a sizable market for that.
In Pennington's case, there were maybe a handful of people in the entire state that could afford it.

False. Good guy and a good family. Congrats to them!

There was a house there previously, I know the man who sold the property to them. Sold for around 1.5 million if I recall correctly. She bulldozed what was a really nice home to build that one.

Not that it will help those going at it on the costs but here are some facts. I got these directly from the listing agent who was quoted in the Advocate story. This was related to me as part of discussions around a project we looked at working on together.
1. The house was previously under contract for $10 mill cash. Buyer had that money but backed out when his team did the numbers and found the annual upkeep to be outside his desired price range. This from a guy who had $10 mill to drop on a second house.
2. She didn't know the exact figure but it was between $500k and $1mill a year for upkeep.
3. The property requires daily upkeep due to landscaping and water features. Think daily cleaning, skimming, etc. Stuff that you can't do once a week.
4. The utilities are outrageous. No clue if this is just due to the size of the main house or the design or what but the electric bill was very high to keep the place at even a reasonably cool temp.
Those are just some things I got straight from the horses mouth. Make of them what you will.
