Paul Newman was a big deal in racing. Historical significance is a huge differentiator for collectibles. Someone wanted this more than another person.
Will he donate all the proceeds to charity?

There's some really rich guy with $17m to throw away who really loved Paul Newman. Or he was trying to impress some woman he is with and $17m really is nothing to him.

Yeah, the Steve McQueen rolex is a really big deal for the same reason, iirc.

Odds are pretty good the Rolex company bought it

I built my watch collection from buying and selling early Daytona's mostly screw crown 6263 exotic dials and the prices they fetch today are incredible.
There is a subset of early Daytonas that are called Paul Newmans because of a picture in an Italian magazine with the picture below. That pump pusher 6239 has become the grail of Rolex collecting and the fact he wore it most every day on the narrow Bund strap melds PN and the watch into one. When it surfaced and was listed for auction the entire watch world knew it would bring a stunning price. The funny thing is in the watch world it is a very basic sports watch with a very utilitarian movement and not remotely haute horlogerie.
BTW a "normal" 6239 w/exotic (3 color) dial in similar condition is worth 60-80k. Some of the other more rare Daytonas car run 150k to 400k. In the late 80s when I was buying you could have your pick for 800-3000 bucks, expect something like the Spirit of Japan dials.

Actually, the odds are pretty low. While Patak and a few others are known to chase their own watches for their museums Rolex historically haven't really done much if any of that. I can think of three people who I know were in the running but there are maybe 2 dozen Rolex collectors that it may have been but it could be someone buying it more for the Newman brand.

Dude, any man dropping $17 million on a watch doesn't have try to impress any woman.

It's a joke, dude. Probably a bad joke but a joke.

Joanne Woodward attended LSU. She's in one of my dad's yearbooks. Guess she met Paul and quit school or started acting and quit school.

As a radioman-gunner, his unit was assigned to the USS Bunker Hill along with other replacements shortly before the Battle of Okinawa in the spring of 1945. The pilot of his aircraft had an ear infection which kept their plane grounded. The rest of their squadron flew to the Bunker Hill. Days later, a kamikaze attack on the vessel killed a number of service members, including the other members of his unit.

I wonder if John Mayer won the bid on it. I know he is a huge watch collector.

At the NASA space museum in Houston they have an Omega moon watch on display. I wonder how much Armstrong’s watch would go for? Shepherd’s? Did Gagarin wear one?

Paul Newman was the man but that seems a little steep.
