If you Google Bob Saget thief, you'll get the whole video. He loses every step of the way.

Its going to be probably $300 or more for someone to fix that for you if you help a little, $500 or more if you want to be completely hands off. To do it right, they need to come back at least 3 times most likely. To do it perfect more like 5-6 times.

Just find an "Odd Job Joe" and work out a deal with them. If you are willing to repaint it and move the furniture, it will probably save you at least $200.

Total cost of material for this is $30 for you to DIY. Its just its 5-6 1 hour days.

Cut back the sheetrock cleanly to the studs. Screw in new sheetrock. Mud the seam gaps and let it dry. Tape and mud the seams. Let it dry. Come back to float it. Let it dry. Texture. Let it dry. Paint.

You can use quick drying mud and do it all in a day fairly easily. But that usually doesn't look as good.

That’s that old school texture. Home Depot does sell little 24”x24” squares of sheetrock for repairs like this.

Problem of this job is that its going to eat up someone's time. Almost no material cost for someone in the business.

Biggest pita is to make it look unnoticeable, it will need to me mudded/floated out at least 18" perimeter from the edges of the hole to be able to hide the seam tape. So that means removing a large area of texture and then re-texturing after mudding is finshed. A decent handyman should be able to get this done in 3 visits. 2 if you are willing to paint the ceiling after the mud is dried. And yes, likely the whole thing will need to be repainted.

You are actually lucky you have a hole with a rafter that will make the repair simple.

1. Just remove the paper hanging from the sides.
2. Draw a template with paper for the hole size
3. Cut a piece of sheetrock to fit, Doesn't have to be perfect but the closet to size of the hole the better because less finishing.
4. Sheetrock screw the cut out sheetrock to the rafter in place.
5. Use finishing mud and float around the edges, screw holes, and feather. let dry then sand.
6. Do #5 again.
7. Take a paint brush and mix sheetrock mud with water then dap the paint brush on the ceiling to re create the texture.
8. Paint.

See how much money you can save on home repairs as opposed to paying some handyman coming out 3 times to do the job.

You are on your way to earning some "sweat equity" as you get more and more proficient at doing things yourself.

Nice job by the way.

ETA: My Bad. I thought you did this yourself and really didn't see where you posted about the guy working nearby that did it for you.

That wasn't a bad price and lucky for you he was on a nearby job or it would have been more for sure.

Updated thread are way underappreciated.

Looks fantastic. Did you already have some paint to match for him to use?

That is unpainted. I’m going to get a match today to paint it myself. I’m just going to get a “sample” of the match.

Yeah you definitely want to paint the entire ceiling the same. If you don’t it may not be very noticeable but it won’t be perfect.
