What is the expected timing of the explosion?
I will bet they will not publish the actual time. They'll probably post a time range that may be a span of several hours. Also, I expect that a large radius of the area will be blocked off and vacated.

But, he cautioned, while experts will place the explosives and take necessary precautions, the cranes and building are damaged so it's not a precise science on where they will land.
Oh well thats good to hear

So much could go wrong but I guess they have no options with the storm coming in.
My brain just can't put together the physics here. They're obviously experts and know what they're doing, but having it fall within the structure's footprint seems almost impossible.
Not to mention the cranes aren't tied to the structure and one in particular is leaning pretty badly already.
One would have to think if they use explosives to fold the jib down first both the shockwave and then jib swinging down would make it extremely unstable and likely to tip. I guess they could use guide cables to direct it?

Seriously, one of you needs to be filming this as it happens. I don't want a delayed news feed that can be yanked the instant this invariably goes even more NOLA shaped.

They are expanding about 150' further and it will remain that way for a few hours while they do the demo.
Per the press conference.
You will probably have a window, but they will blow it when they get it ready to go. Not like there is a real timeline.
Better question is when will the hipsters plan the secondline for the crane.
Also, how do Mardi Gras krewes satire this?

Any good rooftop bars in the area?
We were thinking the Sheraton has a pretty clear view. I think they have a pool on the top floor.

Bringing down the Saenger at no extra charge....

By dropping these cranes most likely on the garage, they’ve ended any chance of this thing not getting demo’d all the way to ground level
Serious question: Is there even a possibility this building doesn't get completely demo'd? I imagine that in reality something might be salvagable, but the stigma that comes along with it would render the structure worthless imo.

Pool is on the opposite corner from the takedown. No way to see it.
Everything from that side of the Hard Rock building is crap. The view from St Charles Plaza is meh at best.
Imagine the Elk Place apartments will be vacated, or else that would be a good spot.

Someone please tell me if this is an accurate summary of the problem:
Here is a screen shot of framing plan from floors 9 - 13. The failure occurred on the right side of the building.
Zooming in on the framing beam spacing, you will see dimensions of slabs ranging from 20-25' on their shortest side.
One of the slabs is 27' x 36'
Here are the notes specifying the type of metal decking to be used.
I have no clue which manufacturer actually supplied the metal decking but I have found load charts from two manufacturers who meet the engineers spec.
You will see both suppliers have very similar max span lengths of 14' and 15' respectively and maxing out span lengths also means only 50 to 60 psf loading capacities at those lengths. The entire right side of the slabs poured exceed these lengths. Hard Rock has spans of up to 27', almost double what is allowed!
Here is a screen shot of the video taken from one of the employees days prior to the collapse showing the slab spans deflecting so much that the shoring legs could not be removed due to the added weight from the slabs deflection.
Notice they removed or tried to remove the shoring before any of the metal stud walls were installed, leaving these slabs with zero support.
From what I've read, it appears the engineer was using the metal studs and sheet rock as load bearing walls and the temporary shoring was to remain in place until walls were installed. Without either, the building could not support itself.

I stayed there recently. Some rooms would have a good view, but the pool is on the other side of the building I'm pretty sure. It's a roof top pool, but it's not on the the top floor.

When will the demo take place?

The plan right now is to set small charges at weak points on the cranes and blow them up before sundown on Friday

Out of the many theories in this thread, this one seems to be the most consistent amongst the guys that know what they're talking about and looking at.
I'm a novice when it comes to this stuff, but even I can read all the decking charts posted along with the plans and see something isn't right.

Don't homewood suits have complimentary beers for guests? I'll chip in $10 to pack into a room with you baws.

This intrigues me. How does this NOT go wrong?!
