We are a young family looking to buy a house in the Baton Rouge area. I found a couple of houses online that could be potential's but I'm not familiar with the Parkview Oaks subdivision. Is it a nice subdivision?

We aren't OT rich and preferably looking for something in the $200k-220k price range. We both hate the commute to Livingston and ascension so that's why we are looking at Baton Rouge. If you have any other suggestions of a good neighborhood in that Price range let me know. I haven't lived in Baton Rouge since college so I don't know all the inns and outs of all the different neighborhoods.

Try Jefferson Terrace

Anything close to those apartments off Sherwood across the street would be a deal breaker for me.

I only drive thru Parkview Oaks on occasion but from appearances, it seems that it is in transition right now.

Hickory Ridge is a good place to start.

Jefferson Terrace is one that may have houses in your price range. Houses go quick there so you have to be fast in locking one up.

I bought a home in Jefferson Terrace about 6 years ago. Since then we've moved but to another house in the neighborhood a few blocks away. It's the best place I've ever lived in BR. It has easy access to both I10 and 12, hits Bluebonnet or Jefferson in minutes and is full of young families. If 220k is your ceiling, you may be a little limited but you could buy an older home on a big lot and tear it down in a few years and build. Or you could just jack that budget up and buy newer. There's like 6 neighborhoods in there: Jefferson Retreat, Jeff Terrace 6th Filing, Somerset, Jefferson Highlands, Bluebonnet Terrace, and then all the older houses with some on like 1/2 acres or more...

Anywhere else in town would be traffic hell for me but that's just my opinion.

If you need a real estate agent rec, let me know.

Thanks! It's just so tough to find something nice within our price range. Jefferson Terrace is definitely a place we would love because of the proximity to both of our work and our daughter's school. $220k is our max budget because we are a young family. Do you have any other reccomendations as to where to other subdivisions other than Jefferson Terrace/Inniswold/Pine Park area?

Try Cedarcrest or Broadmoor

I thought Broadmoor was going downhill. There's a house we can buy by St. Thomas More in Sherwood but we are concerned how the neighborhood will be in 5-10 years. We know right now we would feel safe right there because our friend lives there and he said right now it's not bad.

I grew up in that subdivision and my parents still live there. It's a pretty good area, closer to coursey and sherwood is the "nicer" area. They have some apartments off stumberg and tigerbend that may be classified as kinda ghetto. Overall I liked living there.

Well, neither neighborhood is ascending, but to say downhill would be a gross overstatement.

I'd stick to Jefferson Terrace, maybe try Tara or Westminster.

Thanks for those reccomendations! I didn't realize they were building new developments in that area. Now to just figure out if we want smaller lot and cookie cutter or a larger lot with an older house. Lol.

I would look in Shenendoah before I looked at Sherwood.

Decent older subdivision. Easy drive to restaurants, grocery shopping, Airline, and I-12. Not a bad spot IMO.

Actually as far as Baton Rouge schools go, I think they are zoned to tolerable ones.

It should be done in about 12-15 years. Most mortgages are 30 years.
