Last week a number of parishes started handing out free breakfast and lunch to all kids who came, this was via the school systems.

Today, several parishes announced they are shutting it down due to JBE's "stay at home" order.

I'm confused by this, because the order specifically allows "getting food to go.

In Alabama, they have been using the bus drivers and buses to deliver the meals.

Our parish had an employee that tested positive, so that's why we had to stop our feeder program.

Got a call from my kid's school this afternoon saying they would be giving out food in a drive thru manner tomorrow and Friday. I guess they were already doing it a couple days last week but you had to go to the school and go in. They stressed that nobody was to get out of their vehicles.

Probably because the parishes are about to run out of money and don’t want to spend it on meals. You have to realize the sales tax revenues the governments rely on a monthly basis will be 80-90% less next month. Cash is tight and the feds aren’t helping.

Aren't stores having trouble keeping anything on the shelves? Don't people pay sales tax on those items?

Where is your 80-90% less number coming from?

Ebt people have plenty of funds to buy their children food, especially now that the casinos are unable to collect their cash stipends.

The money for these meals is already in the budget that was approved for the school year

It’s not going over very well. They’ll go back to serving meals pretty soon

Don’t these families get food stamps?

Either of these two:

1. It’s deemed too risky considering the new order
2. They quickly realized that people were taking advantage of the system and found out they were giving out more meals than allotted students.

I've heard that at least part of it is due to the food handlers not having PPE to serve the food properly.

This is kind of sad. And before anyone says it, by God, many of these kids are lily white and poor.

They will be fine with $500 per kid. Schools should never have had free lunches to begin with. Parents should be made to volunteer to pay for the lunches.

Retail grocery sales are only a part of salea tax revenue. There's a lot of heavy equipment, building materials, etc. not being sold right now. Nobody's buying any $5,000 John Deere lawn tractors or $500,000 John Deere combines.

Why is it sad? How many are getting EBT/welfare and the kids are hungry?

Where is the EBT card going? Beer and cigs and scratch-off/lottery tickets?

Thank you. I tried explaining this to someone yesterday. I failed.

If that's the case, the flu and every other disease known to man should have been running rampant in every school in the country before corona shut it all down.
