Acting up, disrespecting teachers, fighting, standing on the lunch table. etc etc etc We have never had any problems with him until this year. I took the PS4 away and threatened to take his phone, he said "then we will fight".
Is your son black? This is important

Yea, I think I would have just open hand slapped that bitch in the face at that moment.

When I was young there would have been no "we" fighting....my dad would have been fighting and I would have taken an arse whipping.

You need to beat his arse with a belt. No matter how old he is.

Military school.
Let other people bust his arse for being disrespectful, let the pros break him.
You ain't got time for that shite, especially the way family courts work these days.

Sixth grade? Now is when he is laying the foundation for what kind of kid he is going to be. Whether your life is going to be a pain in the arse during high school or decent. He is testing to see, and so far, sounds like he is being shown that he pretty much has the power.
After about the second call from school the PS4 and the phone should have been history--at least short term. Problems continue--long term. Let him know that you will make his life uncomfortable if he makes yours uncomfortable. Also make it evident that however crazy he wants to get with you, you will do worse. It works.

I'd have taken it right then and told him, "I guess then is now. Show me what ya got."

Does he have a new group of friends?
My son did this last year in 7th grade at Madisonville. No real issues before. Then suddenly his mom divorces his step dad while I lived 60 miles away. It was like a light switched on.
Starts to Get in trouble daily for talking in class, videoed a fight in the bathroom(not even supposed to have phone), gets in trouble for getting in a slapboxing match of his own, almost fails 7th grade.
The lack of the ornery a-hole stepdad in the house combined with new friends was exactly the problem.
Now I live 10 minutes from them and he's back in Private School in Gonzales with old friends and Teammates. He's had not a single behavior mark(not even talking in class) and has All A's and B in.... Religion. I pick him up 4 days a week from Football practice and we talk school/grades/football over a Gatorade and trailmix on way to his moms. He also stays over night on weeknights more often than before, when he's got tests and projects I want to make sure he prepares for.
It's done absolute wonders.
shite happens. Don't medicate him for that shite like other jackasses suggested. Phases are just that.
I have a daughter on Vyvanse 30mg and she is not a behavior problem. She simply will quietly stare out the window during a test or busy work when not on her medication. She's made straight A's for 3 years now, taking the meds 5 days a week only during school year.

Vyvanse.
One time when I was about 11-12, I was arguing with my dad about school I think, it got pretty heated, and that's when i learned about "old man strength". I made a mistake of taking a swing at him, he caught my fist mid punch and threw me across the room, and told me it wouldn't be in my best interest to ever try that again. I haven't tried that again

My middle schooler know not to challenge me to a fight. There would be no fight, because I am a belt ninja and they know it. He just needs a good arse beating. It will only take one to fix this problem.

Agreed
Kids go through phases we tend to treat symptoms too quickly without digging a little deeper to the main source to alleviate the problem

A 6th grader with a phone is the first problem. If anything they should have a phone that only makes calls.
I knew some pretty raucous kids when I was that age, and even they weren't that bad. Either he is hanging with the wrong crowd, or y'all weren't strict enough.
