Thats why we’re cooler…it makes a BIG difference. Being in competition with your peers that much of your life turns you into a soulless a-hole.
We met so many people in San Francisco that selectively applied to Jr High…they literally had never had real friend in their life, and really didn’t find any value in it then. When you break down life into tasks like that, and never hang out, never fall in love, never do shite you shouldn’t…you turn into a soulless robot that lacks the acuity to find happiness.

Oh I know. Its really no different then moving to be in a good school district to avoid having to pay for private school.
People move outside of the city all the time when they have kids to live in the burbs and raise a family. Its all the same really.
I will say though, getting a quality education has as much to do with your peers as it does the teacher. Being around a lot of really smart people really pushes you to strive more, as opposed to being around people that are not as smart. It really improves the class environment also.

For the non Texans, top 10% gets you into all state schools (I think UT is 8%)
If only there were some standardized way to test these kids so you could compare kids from different schools...

Maybe the kids should work harder or get smarter instead of moving to lower the quality of competition

Totally agree. That’s what makes it a tough choice for dudes like the OP.
Interesting side point since you spent time in Del Rio. The top 10/6 rules have primarily benefited kids from rural and south Texas. Far more of them in Austin and College Station than before. Hasn’t done much for inner city kids. Maybe helps prove your point about class environment.

I moved away from shitty school districts for my kids. Probably why Livingston and Ascension are growing so fast, because I'm not the only one doing the same.

Honestly, LSU could benefit from this. Arkansas has -
My kid applied to Arky and they comp the out of state tuition based on GPA. It’ll be cheaper for her to go to Arkansas than A&M or Texas. Arky gets a kid that has a A+ GPA, NHS, musician and athlete. There are a ton of Texas kids at Arkansas.

this is one reason for the explosion in popularity/growth at the satellite campuses. A student still gets some semblance of the "Brand" of UT/ATM by going to UTSA/UTDallas/ATM SA etc. When my kids were starting college 12 yrs ago, I heard an SEC admin (might've even been Nick Saban) say that Texas top 10% rule was actually a boon for the SEC, because a lot of very good students who didn't meet that rule were now going to SEC schools. My daughter graduated from LSU in 2018 and I remember at some parent orientation, they asked us to raise hands by what State we came from, and when they got to Texas, there must've been half the room. I went to UT in the early 80's btw...Geaux Tigers! Btw, people move districts in Texas just to have their kid play for Katy, Allen, etc..

No doubt. Go to UTSA for a year, get good grades and you are guaranteed admission to UT Austin as a sophomore. But that kind of sucks, so why not go to Arkansas, OU, LSU, Alabama, etc. Top 10/6 rules are a huge driver in Texas kids going to other SEC schools.

If #11 at the best school is smarter than #1 at the worst school then #11 should be the one who gets in and not left out.
