Parents of the OT, would you move away for your kids?

A lot of my friends from Houston are moving away from woodlands because there are specific type of very academic people who are crowding the schools making it harder for their kids to get top10%. Makes me think is it acceptable to run away from strong competition?

For the non Texans, top 10% gets you into all state schools (I think UT is 8%)

So they are moving to worse school districts so their kids appear smarter by comparison?

In Texas, top 10% get auto acceptance to all state schools so… yes

you don’t have to move to a worse school system, just a less “competitive” one

it makes some sense since Texas uses the “top 10%” criteria

but it’s also chicken/egg, the better school distracts attract a certain demo so it would probably be wasted effort

Ahh, didn't know that.

Seems like a pretty dumb, easily exploitable blanket rule.

I know some Texas folks right across the river from me. They purposely keep their girl in a small high school for sports so she could play and to artificially inflate her class ranking.

It's a fricking joke. If you have to move to a school with dummies to get accepted to UT, then maybe you shouldn't be there in the first place.

Does the 10% only apply to public schools?

Is it the top 10% of all graduating TX Seniors, or the top 10% of individuals at a particular high school? If it's by the particular school, that seems pretty retarded.

Work still has to be done & at least it’s not just “gifted” because of your background or acceptance guidelines

There are certain high schools that host the gifted/accelerated program for CISD that block normal kids from having a shot at top 10%.

This ain’t new, I’ve heard of folks getting an apartment in an area close by for their kids final year of high school to get that auto-acceptance.

10% - ATM
7% - UT

There are other ways to get automatically accepted into schools. Seems like a silly reason to move the entire family. Maybe there are other reasons

If you can't fricking compete against smart people in your HS, and move so you can...well guess what you're going to be competing against those same smart people at UT and in the workforce.

So what are they going to do them...run from UT and go to SFA?
