True story.

Parent recently gets called in for a conference with the principal and guidance counselor. Administration is trying to get this kid on track and out of school, and asks the parent & kid what the plan is if/when he finishes high school.

Mom basically says it's not a big deal if her son can barely read, write, or do basic math, because he's going to the NBA. FYI - the kid is 5 foot nothing and doesn't even see the court for us - and we're terrible.

And this parent gets to vote for our nation's leader, and her vote carries the same weight as mine.

But we are all created equal.
This kid will be fine. Only because we as hard working taxpayers will make sure all is paid for.

Even worse, many who did make it to the NBA were too stupid to manage finances so they ended up being supported by the working class

Who is we?

It perplexes me that the government spends $17,000 per "tax payer", which means that you as an individual would have to make >$100k, $200k(husband and wife)....just to pay what you owe.

So a guy who makes $60k, paying a little over $5k is acting holier than thou because he's only -$12k in the hole versus that POS -$17k in the hole?

So....does every tax payer see exactly $17,000? Does the government spend the same amount on everyone?

72% is mandatory, like SSI and medicare. things like that(old people, your elderly loved ones, who already paid for 50 years) ~$12,250 of the total

so discretionary ~$4,750, what would you take out that you don't get?

and then calculate how much of the $17k you'd still owe

That's a strange and pointless response to the OP.

It's okay to be upset, just know your part when pointing fingers to better access the true issue

Interesting. I remember Lakeboy using a similar figure to suggest those people basically had no right to bitch about their taxes being wasted.

Coincidence?

Your numbers are outdated and wrong. MFJ with income of 150k pays about 29k in federal income tax. That's not taking SS & Medicare into account

I see $23k, with zero dependents.

And that's with no deductions, house, student loans, etc

I just googled the info for an info graph....I don't think it's hypothetical, it's the real "Average" collected in 2011
