When the parents grew up, if you ran from the police you got a beating. If you hurt a cop you went to the hospital. The rules were non negotiable and everyone understood. Then Rodney King happened.

Viscious cycle. Parents and media teach fear and disrespect, it causes situations to escalate.

I didn't need to be told that; it seemed like common sense to not potentially antagonize a person with a gun.
Roll down your windows, turn down the radio, don't fidget around while they're walking up/keep your hands visible.
Seems pretty obvious. They don't know me, I don't know them and I'd like them to like me and NOT give me a ticket if possible.

Because they are not sitting their kids down and telling them to say yes sir no sir to the police. They are indoctrination them that police are out hunting little black boys for fun. It's hard to keep up with this lie for this long.

My dad absolutely had that talk with me. But it wasn't some drawn out dramatic even that people make it out to be. This kinda thing used to called "raising your kids properly"

My parents definitely told me to be polite and respectful to the police. They even said that some of them are real jerks and you just have to take it.
I don't think that's a black thing, but I have noticed a lot of people claiming it is a black thing recently. These people have an extremely distorted view of the relationship between white people and the cops. We're not exchanging friendly waves and laughing it up together after the shift change, I assure you.

I didn't have to tell my kids about cops. They clearly understood when they noticed the gun on their hip.

you should tell your kids to never talk to cops. smile, nod, agree. never say anything about your parents, household, anything at all.
you should also tell them that should they say anything other than hello, yes, am i being detained?, their parents could be taken, beaten, imprisoned, and they might have to live in walker in a trailer.
