Yeah that's a good point.

i believe the 2 shades of these rankings are

1. the biased "heart-based" approach that wiki somewhat alluded to (that's how they framed the propaganda he spoke of)

2. diets that work IF YOU DO NOTHING ELSE. loading up on protein is great if you're using the fuel. if you're just changing diet, then the other options are better ways to lose weight (and move to being "heart healthy", whatever that means)

Will be obsolete in a couple of years. It is a cult fad. Don't drink the kool-aid.

Calories in vs calories out

I disagree with this mode of thinking. I believe that it is more important to focus on a diet that reduces processed food especially carbohydrates and finding the optimal "dose" of muscle training. Cardio is not necessary, and endurance training itself can be unhealthy in my opinion. The calories burned by "running" 5k every few days is minuscule compared to the amount of calories ingested. Furthermore, the increase in injury risk and general inflammation caused by the amount running/cycling/etc. needed to actually burn significant calories makes these exercises unhealthy.

Really only thing we cut out is sugar and most grains.

The only other thing we do is find wheat alternatives. Nobody in our crew has celiac, but replacing empty wheat with healthier alternatives (e.g. almond flour) is a smart substitution, IMHO.

Calories do matter but they are not the end all be all.

Ultimately it is about a calorie balance, but the quality of input affects the output and result - the straight calorie counters forget that.

As an example - if I ate my 1800 calories with 100% sugar, versus 100% protein (egg whites) - I would feel a whole lot better eating the protein, but my kidneys would take a beating with all the protein I can't use. The 100% sugar diet is likely to result in very poor health. Likewise, people who cut nearly most of the fat out are typically hungry all the time. A good balance - and more importantly, finding the right balance for you - whether that's 50/25/25, or 45/35/20 - or whatever it takes to get you there - is as important as total calories - in the long run.

Eating a macronutrient balance, with an appropriate caloric load, is going to give you the best bang for your buck. Most Americans need to eat fewer total calories, fewer grams of carbs and more fiber - small percentage shifts in those 3 areas would solve most people's "intake" problems.

Just find it odd that none of the OT CFers are admitting to Paleoing, which the diet is centered around.

actually cf pushes the zone. my personally opinion is that of rob wolf " weighing, measureing and obssessing over every food is as much an eating disorder as anorexia"

like him i find just eating quality helps me not have to worry as much about quanity.

and most cf people on this board are not doing real paleo, but most are doing 80% paleo.

Eat meats, fruits, and vegetables - and eat all you want - and the weight will fall off.

I have done it before and I am doing it again. It works and is really simple. Stay away from processed foods, bread, sugar, cheese, and dairy and it is pretty incredible how much weight you can lose.

I dropped 55 lbs lbs last year simply by limiting my carb intake. Easiest thing ever. No pasta, no bread, no shite fast food, no premade garbage. Just meats and certain veggies - and by meats I don't mean beef/steak every day and nothing fried. I'm satisfied with it. cholesterol is down, blood pressure is down, protein intake way higher with more muscle growth. Its kinda atkins-ish, but i dont do the untra-fatty/cholesterol stuff like bacon and ground beef.

Yup, just eat lean meats. Do eat all the bacon you want everyday. Also limit the amount of fruits you eat late at night.

btw cf is not a fad, all it does is combine weightlift, running, and gymnastics into a class format. as much as parts of it drive me crazy it seems most would support the growing popularity of it because atleast the people going are not being lazy frickers sitting on the couch munching on cheetos.

amd alatiger I agree when eating lean meats, fruits, veggies weight falls off almost no matter how much you eat. it keeps the diet simple, no weighing, measuring, obsessing, etc and for most people that is the simplest way to do this. is it restricive? hell yes it is, but its better then having to eat bird size portions or bullshite rice cakes, plus the results are better.

and I agree 10000% with what wiki said, the so called heart healthy grain based diet is all propaganda.

The only thing I have found a bit problematic with paleo is my cholesterol is high.

Much of it is genetic but you can ingest too much with paleo if you aren't careful.

Yea....you should just follow the USDA's recommendations. That's the best advice. Look at where it has brought us.

In seriousness, I don't subscribe to a formal diet, but paleo generally has good advice. They exclude some things that I view as extreme (dairy, legumes, etc.), but overall it is a whole food diet plan. Every trend has idiots or people that find loopholes to do stupid things (ie the honey granola comment above), but most medical guidelines for diets include some questionable advice.....such as promoting whole grains and restricting dietary fat for people with diabetes.

Nutrition is a discipline that offers completely contradictory opinions from qualified authorities who use data that supports their claims. Most subjects aren't black and white....just a lot of gray.

Then how come when I showed up to my physical I had high cholesterol at age 25?

I was eating flawlessly leading up to it. Tons of veggies, lean meat and a little fruit.

Cholesterol 187....

I think the problem that most people have with paleo is that the initial concept has been bastardized

this shite is not diet food for someone trying to lose weight

I still cant figure out why so many people care what other people do with their lives. if someone gets their asses up off the couch and try to get healthy, why does it matter if it is crossfit, running, weight lifting, masturbating, or anything else. Let them do it!

genetics and lifestyle. do some research into it, i dont have time to get into every little factor right now. has nothing to do with dietary intake though.

to me this is more what it is.

also to the OP i went and read the reviews and the main gripe was that implementing a the paleo diet in a modern world is hard, that is a dumb reason to rank a diet.

Never had a diet program 'pushed' at crossfit, did have a nutritionist come out and talk about whole foods that you could go to. I didn't.

Of course I have never seen a kip taught, never seen someone throw up, never seen a 'confusing' exercise done to exhaustion. Seen almost all exercises scaled for the some folks. Never seen oly lifts done till exhaustion and have seen many folks asked to stop due to poor form. Hell, I thought I would hate it, I do most days. I am ambivalent to what folks think, I just think it is funny that so many people have such a strong opinion about it.

Paleo seems to have a solid foundation, I am like others that don't understand how a bean could be excluded.
