the zone concepts are taught at the level 1 course. and I have seen people throw up doing base line workouts, mainly because of them coming from some other athletic background and wanting to compete with others.

and the reason the bean is excluded is because many people have problems digesting them, think gas that comes with beans.

I have been doing paleo for a couple months and it works. Very simple. I haven't cut out cheese at all, though. Meat, cheese, nuts, vegetables. Easy to follow, easy to keep up.

Under 40g carbs/day... lose fast.
Under 100g... lose slow.
Under 150g... maintain weight.

Once you're in maintenance, you can eat whatever the frick you want a couple days a week.

I refuse to exercise until I hit my target weight. I threw the "diet" out the window for a couple weeks, and am starting back up this morning.

To all those that think it's crazy, you're thinking Atkins... which was insane. This is a similar concept, but much easier and better for you since you're getting fiber.

all this zone or blocking crap is what scares people off or what makes people give up

just keep it simple, we all know what is good for us

I just hate it when people preach that whatever fad diet plan they are doing is the be all, end all way you should be eating. Most of the time these same people will be on a different fad the following year.

oh, I am sure some have gotten sick, and I am sure they train some on diet, just never had it pushed. Look, we had a guy at our place 'certified' and he couldn't tell you where basic anatomy was located...scary, and I can see where some folks are just given terrible instruction. I doesn't take an exercise physiologist to know if you are dealing with a dumbass.

I thought most of the gas was from the high fiber content.

It seems most of use Paleo guys in this thread are on the same page. Avoid pre made, processed crap. Eat lean meat, fruit, veggies and have some portion control if you splurge on cheat meals. I don't see how that can be a bad diet.

I'm about 80% paleo myself and if I wanted to try to go 100% then the diet would get to hard for me to follow. The 100% people are the ones that make paleo look so hard to follow.

I don't even like to call it a diet, it's just a way of life for me. I try to avoid to much sugar, try to keep my insulin stable, and eat correct portions.

Does anyone still believe in eating no carbs past 5 pm? Is this a myth?

I will say that paleo really isn't that hard to follow if you keep it basic. I eat "paleo" almost every night, and I by no means do it as some diet. It is just how I eat. A grilled or baked protein with 2 roasted or sauteed veggies. It's simple.

TIL I eat paleo.

Pleasantly surprised at the responses to the OP.

I agree with much that has been said.

I'll add this:

The diets aren't ranked by results, they're ranked by opinions of the experts in the conventional wisdom crowd.

Legumes are fine if soaked for 24-48 hours and rinsed before cooking. Unfortunately, red beans probably have the least overall nutrition, but I wouldn't quit eating them, just know that black beans are at the top, and navy beans are decent too.

I cringe when I hear lean meats. Fatty meats are preferred. Ancient humans were after the organs and bone marrow, then the fatty meat, then the rest. Most people today can't stomach organs so fatty meat is your best option. If you like beef liver it's about the most nutritious food you can find.

Finally, grains and sugar are the most responsible for modern health problems, so if you just limit those to extreme you're way ahead of the game.

Nothing to do with it?

You sure?

I know some of it is genetic with me but I was working out like crazy before the physical...

It really is simple. Look at the label on everything you eat. Keep the total carbs(some say minus fiber carbs) under 40, 100, or 150 depending on what stage you're at and you're gold. Nothing else really matters. Two days a week you can blow it out with no consequences(once you're on maintenance).

I was eating between 100 and 125 g most days for the beginning of last year and working out 13 minutes a week, and the fat just melted off.

This is mainly why I think limiting carbs is the most important thing one can do to lose/maintain fat level.

All I see as far as the "best" are commercially powered diets. Diets that you have to buy into via a company.

Article is BS.

Truth is a hard thing to come by in a world where corporations and lawyers buy off the government, and also doctors (see Big Pharma).

IMO Paleo is less about what you are giving up and more about replacing the nutritionally-empty foods you were eating with nutritionally dense foods.

My family been 90% Paleo + dairy for about 2 years and it is easy to follow and we have never felt better.

The best route to take is what Robb Wolf reco's....go 30 days with no wheat, legumes or daily and limit other grains. After 30 days, reintroduce gray-area items like rice and even dairy and see how you do. The only item I avoid like the plague is wheat - I certainly feel a difference.

I will have the occasional plate of red beans in cold weather.

Now, why would doctors and nutritionists support anything that goes against the status quo sickcare/healthygrain/statis/CHD money machine?

Hmmm...

Show me again how it's good to eat grains when they spike your insulin like a goddamn candy bar?

Show me how much grain humans have eaten relative to their tenure on this planet (say ~200000 years in modern form). What, maybe 5% of that time have humans been cultivating grain.

If they 'food pyramid' diet recommended by these doctors and nutritionists is so healthy, then why are so many Americans sick and obese?

Are you trying to say that anyone who questions the status quo is an idiot?

quote:

When will these cult douche bags realize that it's not that great?

I think you are. That is known in intelligent circles an ad-hominem attack. You can go google that and figure out why it makes you look foolish and damages your argument. Well, that and your appeal to authority.

All I know is eating low carb has resulted in me being healthier and feeling better. Numbers better. Fat lower. And I eat all the bacon, butter, red meat, cheese, and eggs I can.

I don't feel hungry between meals, my blood sugar is stable. At 46 I'm not any prescription meds, unlike so many of my peers who adhere to the 'healthy diet' you point out in your link to obvious propaganda.

If you can't understand why people who are making a fortune off of your ignorance would lie to you so they could continue to milk that ignorance, then I pity you.

It may be that you're someone who's benefiting directly from the high-sugar, high carb, low fat poison diet? Sell pharmaceuticals? Medical devices? Nutritionist? Doctor? Nurse? Pharmacist? Health insurance worker? .Gov worker?

Come on, fess up.

Anybody with a brain can turn off the propaganda, do their own research, then figure out the optimum diet for themselves.

Believing something because it comes from the mainstream media, without doing any further research, belies either your ignorance or the fact that you are a shill for something deadly.

No thanks.

Keep eating your hydrogenated oils, hfcs, refined flours, and low fat foods and see where you end up; and how many prescriptions you'll need to be on just to function at a low level.

After all, that's what most people do, right?

Look around you and your own eyes will tell you the truth.

I have Crohns disease and for a year and a half, it was getting worse and worse. My diet was not great but I was taking my pills and they were not working. My doctor wanted to escalate me to giving myself a shot every two weeks in the stomach area. I said, "frick that!" My good friend did some research and found a book called "Breaking The Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet." It explains the diet and provides a list of do's and don't's. The diet is called the Specific Carbohydrate Diet but is nearly identical to the Paleo Diet.

I began to feel better almost immediately. I went back to my gastroenterologist about a month and a half after that and brought the book. He was incredibly skeptical and began demeaning the book by reflex. But I was feeling way better (all pain and other symptoms were gone). He took my blood as usual. When I returned a few months later, he said my blood work showed my Crohns had improved dramatically and that he had been recommending that book to all of his other patients.

While just one anecdote, it shows that even a gastroenterologist is dismissive of a good diet that works because it is new to them or they may not understand it. The paleo diet basically changed my life. For the first time since being diagnosed 11 years ago, I have control of my Crohns.
