Anyone done this? My wife wants them painted white and estimates have been $2300 to $3500. I can see this as the type of project that I say "screw paying that much, I will do it myself" only to realize I am way over my head.

Are those estimates way off or in line with a pro doing them? Anyone tackle this themselves?

Do they need to be removed to paint?

it’s tedious work especially if you paint the insides also
lots of sending and prep

Did them myself. Results were meh.

That price seems high, but a lot of labor involved.

It's a pain in the arse. Just pay someone to do it and move on.

That sounds ridiculous. I'd get some more estimates.

Are they painted or stained now?

It’s a lot of work and a big pain in the arse. No idea what size “cabinets” we’re talking about so can’t comment on estimate. If they’ve all been in line, prob about right and worth paying IMO.

Sounds about right assuming they sand and remove the faces when they spray them. Also assuming they are using oil base your looking at 3 day job since oil dries sloooooowwwww

we did it a couple weeks ago. Took about half a saturday and we're pleased with how they look. Most of the time is spent taping off the walls and taking cabinet doors off and putting them back on.

Is it worth that much to you to have your cabinets not look like shite? Because if you don't know what you are doing, they will look exactly like some guy (you) who didn't know what he was doing threw some paint on existing cabinets.

Pay to have it done by pros. That being said, just because they say they are a "painter" doesn't mean they know how to do it.

My wife wants to paint ours. I've been trying to hold her off. We have tons of cabinets. 40 drawers and doors. She's going to hate that shite when she gets about 1/4 of the way done.

Get a couple of quotes. I got a few quotes for my mom's cabinets to be done and they ranged from $3500 to $1000. She went went with the $1000 guys and the cabinets came out great.

Pay it. I’m surprised it’s not more. I stained mine and I had only 300-400 in material However I bet I had 80 hours in once all said and done with sanding, sealing, two coats of stain, and two coats of poly.

you should be able to get it done for around $1800-$2000 or roughly $100 per cabinet.

its very very labor intensive and its not a job you want to do yourself.

its well worth paying someone to do it for you

if they are good quality custom wood cabinets they need the varnish stripped off and those chemicals are harsh and stinky and that part alone takes a couple of days.

for a large kitchen allow 4-5 days before its finished and you are back to normal living again

Physically impossible as you need minimum 18 hours between coats of oil based paint and to coats minimum to achieve anything that looks good.

Sanding and prepping the doors alone will take a day unless you have a 5x5 kitchen

We just did it. I can take some pictures of cabinets & upload pictures from prep in a bit. Can also recommend paint & a sprayer. It's not too expensive to DIY or difficult.

Are you getting quotes from an actual painter/painting company?

If so, find a Mexican handyman that will do it for half that

To answer some questions:

39 cabinets and 11 drawers.

Currently have dark wood stain

Those were professional painters that would actually remove all the doors and take them to a paint shop (they are of Latin descent )

Of course this is the first thing the wife wants to have done after purchasing this home...
