My thoughts exactly. How would the discovery of alien life influence anyone to abandon their spiritual beliefs?

You think a group in control is going to just quit after finding some fossils on another planet, after all of these thousands of years of control?

The church has changed their stance many of times. You've even had the catholic church talk about the potential of aliens. So if we do find aliens or fossils else where, you can best be sure that the church will change their view again to keep up with the modern times, even though one would imagine that their holy book would be accurate regardless of the time period.

Can you imagine having the time and government funding for this to be your major concern?

Lotta truth across that post...

We're looking for radio waves when quantum entanglement driven walkie talkies could transmit instantly over the vastness of the universe...with no ability to be detected...

I feel like we're a nature preserve out here, protected for observation...

What's hard to comprehend is the things we are observing 40,000 light years away happened 40,000 years ago, seeing what was happening elsewhere while evolution was still taking place here. The milky way even could be littered with life at this exact time, we wont know until far into the future.

Space is fuggin big bruh

The “Great Filter” is the most retarded thing floating around the internet these days. I can’t believe people have latched onto it. It takes the same leap of faith to but into that shite as it does to but into God.

There is many filters. Many still ahead I'm sure. GRB's, collisions, orbital destabilization, etc. etc. Mars's filter may have been its small size. Venus you could argue did even worse with near earth like make up.

Also, is every single documented sighting of a UFO fake or mistaken? I don't think that option can be ruled out. The recent release of the Navy pilots video recordings and testimony of the flying "egg" is pretty strong evidence things are out there. Some very believable people have seen strange things.

As far as SETI goes, maybe radio is a short blip in the evolution of communication, and if life is exceedingly rare, its so far away the signal is washed out.

And finally, maybe civilizations smart enough to build self replication machines always realizes that idea could end up being a filter to future life forms by using up all available materials.

To find multi celled or even highly evolved life one planet from us in our same solar system, the changes is our life form being very special is drastically reduced. It would mean most likely we havent passed through the great filter yet.

Why do we think we are “special” anyway?

Why does finding evidence of previous life on Mars have any bearing on weather earth has already seen the great filter?

That doesn't make any sense.

Earth has a pretty extensive fossil record of extinct species so what difference does it make if Mars has one, too?

Yeesh.

I believe we just haven't made it to the level where the more advanced civilizations give a shite.

Dinosaurs were around for forever, and human beings as we know them are a relatively new phenomenon.

Because they were as comeplex as us, but were filtered. That means most likely the filter hasn't occurred for earth yet.

It's only one theory. People need to stop getting so worked up.

So.

Maybe conditions on their planet led them to be filtered but conditions here let us make it through the filter.

Maybe we were able to adapt to the conditions left by the filter and they weren’t.

It's a theory that doesn't make sense.

He's not saying he have to discover Martian Atlantis. He's saying any proof of former life proves his point.

Well, OK but what makes Mars so special in that regard? We have a fossil record here filled with mass extinction here on Earth so we already know shite happens in the cosmic sense. And we're sort of sure that Mars had at least habitable conditions at some point so how does this prove any sort of "Great Filter" if we find some fossil of a Martian cockroach one day?
