Kentucky rifles were usually smaller in caliber, like .45ish, compared to .75ish caliber of the popular military Brown Bess. Neither really close to golf ball size though.
Why don’t you have a double fowling piece instead? Two shots and much more maneuverable in close quarters for home defense.

I'd recommend a blunderbuss stuffed with some glass chunks and other debris.

A blunderbuss is just a muzzleloading fowling piece with a flared muzzle. Once you load the powder charge, anything you load on top-lead swan shot, gravel, chopped up nails….will work as projectiles.

Chopped up nails.....

Sounds good to me as long as the bad guys and the government agree to only have muskets.

Own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up. Just as the founding fathers intended

Here here! I found your anecdote gave me quite the giggle. I shall wax amusing of this in my next memoir. Tally ho!

A musket ball versus a pistol bullet? Maybe slight edge to the musket

Musket ball versus a modern rifle? Rifle wins, and it ain’t close

A question screamed at me repeatedly in a former life: “WHAT IS THE SPIRIT OF THE BAYONET!?!”. See if anyone on here can answer it.

I actually own a legit Civil War musket with a bayonet still attached to it. My great grandfather bought it in 1916 for three dollars on the street in Vicksburg Mississippi.

Been in our family (above fireplaces) ever since.
