I’ve traveled for a job interview on my dime and it worked out. I had one company fly me to Dallas and the interview sucked.

I was working with a recruiter who asked if I’d be available to come to Dallas for an interview and I said yes. Had nothing but time since I wasn’t working, so I bit the bullet and went. Got the job, the rest is history. We’re not a cheap company by any means, as the fee to hire me was well into 5 figures, but they wouldn’t have taken the chance to pay someone to interview.

Do not even consider doing this. If they’re not willing to reimburse you in a tight job market then what are they going to do to you when the market slackens again?

The kicker is, they want me to do it on my dime. It will require a plane ticket and likely a hotel room for a night.

And get reimbursed, right?

Because if they are asking you to pay for the interview, that's a company I would NEVER consider working for.

I've worked for some cheap companies, but never one that would ask a candidate to pay for his own travel expenses, unreimbursed, for an interview.

I have been on 3 out of state interviews over the years. All 3 paid my flights and reimbursed me for cab fare. One company paid for me twice. I got both jobs. This last one I had to fly twice to Chicago i hope is my last job.

I have had another company want me to pay my way to go interview. I declined and they surprised. I told them that they didn’t make it thru my interview process.

If it were me, this would be a red flag. Interviewing is a cost and if they are not willing to foot the bill, what does that say about them?

Ask them if they would pick up the cost for a greyhound ticket just to mess with them. If they do give it to a homeless guy.

I just flew across the county to interview for a job on my own dime. It’s a teaching job, so that definitely affects how I perceive them not offering to provide funds for my travel.

I did have a non profit based in Los Angeles offer me an interview but wanted me to fly there. I said no thanks.

See previous page. It didn’t work out, unfortunately.

You are a moron.

I take full responsibilities for my actions. But I refuse to beat myself up over it.

I was at a wedding, I was drunk. My wife’s friend offered me a cookie off their plate, not an unusual move considering it is at a wedding. Didn’t even know it had marijuana until the friend told me the next morning. I think the mistake I made could’ve happened to anybody. Usually when people offer you edible drugs they tell you that it’s drugs. I’ve never been in a position before where I needed to question someone if the food they offered me is laced with drugs.

If you want to think of me as an idiot or naive for doing that, then that’s fine, but I don’t.

You and I both know you didn't have an interview with the FBI bit hypothetically you would be a moron to share that story with the FBI

You're an idiot for tell them, not for eating an edible almost a year ago.

Think they are saying because you self reported, not for eating the cookie.

Either way it’s done, gotta move forward.

My other option was to lie on a polygraph test to a special agent, a move that also would’ve disqualified me and made it harder to gain employment with them in the future.

A company that isn't willing to foot the bill for an interview isn't a company you want to work for.

I would consider this for a legitimate nonprofit, if I believed in their mission. I would never consider such an offer from a for-profit business.

If it wasn’t in LA, I might have considered it. Job would have paid at most $75k and I’ve got kids. Just wasn’t worth my time or theirs for me to pay to fly out for an interview.

It’s not a start up. It’s a large company, with offices across the United States and international. I would be more understanding if it was a small, regional company.

Then someone at a local office (or much closer office) should be okay to interview you in person, while a skype interview should suffice for the NYC office.

This isn't necessarily a red-flag on their end. Use your creative problem solving skills to make this move happen.
