Life’s about choices. He’s really interested, he pays his way and risks the $800 he will spend in travel. If not, he doesn’t. No ones holding a gun to his head. My point is, they are probably weeding out people that they think aren’t serious about the position and just want a free trip to NYC. Which by the OPs original post, he’s not really that interested in the job. This is exactly the last person I’d want to spend money on flying up for an interview.

BTW, now that we know he’s a pot head and won’t pass the drug screening, he should save his money.

Then my response is to weed out companies that aren't serious about hiring good people. It's a two way street where the company has to sell themselves to me.

As if anyone is dying to work for a cheapskate like you.

If he hasn’t articulated that he is serious about potentially moving to NYC, I don’t have a problem with them not paying his travel. The OP poster himself said he had serious doubts about whether he wanted to do that.

You also presume they aren’t paying for more qualified and more serious candidates to come interview there. Just because they aren’t paying his travel, doesn’t mean they aren’t paying others.

If you aren’t as qualified and desperate to get your foot in the door it may be worth your investment. If you are in high demand, then I agree f them and get a job elsewhere. By his original and subsequent posts it doesn’t sound like he has the negotiating power here though. Again, the choice is his. I don’t think it’s a reflection of the company per se. Just a reflection of the candidate’s qualifications, seriousness about potential relocation, and whether his skills are in high or low demand.
