Exactly my point.

they want me to do it on my dime
Nope.
I would never expect a candidate that I wanted to interview to pay their own way.

Honestly, they are probably trying to gauge your real level of interest. Maybe they sensed you may not be that serious about moving there. I could see lots of people going to NYC for an interview doubtful they really want the job (like you) but think screw it, Its a free trip to NYC, why not. Then employer has to pay for a bunch of non-serious mo-fos free trip to NY. If you are serious about the job, pay for the trip. If they make you an offer negotiate on relocation(run if they won’t pay your relocation). You can also make yourself whole on trip costs in negotiations on salary, sign on bonus, etc.

If they are being tightwads now they will be in the hiring process and your salary. Just my $.02

You’ve got like three threads in the last few months about starting new jobs, one about starting your dream job in Los Angeles from February. What the heck is going on? Are these offers not legit or are you already looking to move on? I don’t get it.

Unless it’s a start-up or some sort of industry conference there, no. You’re on the fence about it and they need to sell themselves to you as well. frick it.
It’s not a start up. It’s a large company, with offices across the United States and international. I would be more understanding if it was a small, regional company.

I've driven out of state twice for interviews, and they paid my mileage each time. It wasn't really that far either.
I wouldn't bother flying and paying for a hotel with a company that you may, or may not get hired. If they were a legit company, they'd pay

My dream job in LA fell through. It was a really shitty situation. The job was with the FBI. I had a situation where I was at a wedding 9 months ago and ate a peanut butter cookie that a friend offered to me. I found out the next day that it was a weed cookie. I told the FBI about this and even though it happened without my knowledge or consent, it violated their mandatory drug policy. I have to wait 2.5 years till I can try again once that incident is outside of the scope of their policy.
You could've said your unicorn had skittles diarrhea on the way to the interview so you didn't make it on time and I would've believed that quicker than I believe this story.

I'd tell you to request a skype interview. Flying and all that without reimbursement is a huge red flag.
If you haven't already done so, I'd tactfully mention the expense of such a trip and simply suggest alternative options. As others have said however, you should take note bc this is likely a strong indicator of an organizational culture that you want no part of

They just emailed me and want to know if I would be willing to travel to their office for an in person interview. The kicker is, they want me to do it on my dime. It will require a plane ticket and likely a hotel room for a night.
Hard pass...you shouldn't have significant out-of-pocket expenses for a job interview and any company worth a shite would take care of this for you.

I did this when I was younger and tired of working offshore. Since I was offshore, I had to use leave and make up some clever excuses to even be able to go.
I paid travel and hotel for a first interview, where the supervisor I'd be working for couldn't make it. I had a pretty good interview with an HR lady and the project director.
I paid travel and hotel for a second interview to meet with the supervisor, who must have gotten resumes mixed up because he had very awkward mixed up questions.
They emailed me for a third in-person interview to talk to the VP. I was stuck offshore and asked for a phone interview and I never heard a peep out of them again.
At this point in my career, they can fly me business class or kiss my arse.

I wouldn't read that much into it other than that to them, you are a kinda random potential hire.
That doesn't mean you are wasting your time, it just means they don't know enough about you to invest in you when they have plenty of local talent from which to choose.
So if you want to move to NYC, go there, interview and bring your A game. If you don't particularly care then look elsewhere.

That’s great, man. You don’t have to believe me, I don’t care at all. I only brought it up in this thread because a poster asked why I started a thread about moving to L.A a few months ago for my dream job, and now I’m interviewing for a job in NY.
If it makes you feel better, you can think my dream job in L.A was fry cook at McDonalds and I lost it because I snorted coke off a hobos dick in a back alley during my lunch break. Makes no difference to me, Its entirely irrelevant to the thread.

I've been on a hand full of job interviews out of state. Each time it was on their dime. One I paid up front, they reimbursed. If they aren't willing to pay your way, they're not serious.

Seeing a lot of responses ITT that make me believe it’s justified to be turned off by a company asking me to travel on my own dime for an interview.
Being that I was already on the fence, I’ll probably tell them I’m unwilling to travel on my own accord for an interview and then see where things go from there.

Oh frick you, you piece of shite. He’s 4 years out of college, and just because you’re petty as shite, you’re going to force some people to fly out on their dime instead of a Skype interview just to determine if he’s serious? What if they all fly out for the interview?
“Hey thanks you stupid assholes for being dumb enough to spend a combined 8K to fly out and interview for this company that is worth billions. In the meantime out of our 7 candidates who flew out, we decided to hire a NYC based rep due to his connections in the local area. I know most of you could barely afford it, but take solace in knowing we wouldn’t have helped you with your moving expenses.”
Seriously, frick you if you would do that to someone who doesn’t have much cash and you work for a multi million dollar firm.
