Our great “throw away society.” Name things you’ve picked up or thrown away.

Was talking about this earlier in another thread. It blows my mind how people just throw things away and buy another without doing any research into why it’s not working.
A couple years ago, my wife brought home a Dyson Animal vacuum cleaner from the neighborhood while walking the dogs. It worked but had no suction. I washed out the vortex tubes and pulled about a pound of carpet fibers and hair out of it with a piece of coat hanger wire. Incredible vacuum. Was $500 new.
I’ve got a weed eater (cracked fuel line), Shark cordless vac (clogged tube), and a stainless steel 3 burner grill with propane tank (just needed cleaning) from the neighborhood.
I’ve bough 3 other Dyson’s at estate/garage sales for cheap (one needed a new belt) and one at Goodwill. The brush wasn’t turning so I got it for $10 because I thought the belt was broken. Turns out it was just a reset button on the head that I had to push.

Someone moved out down the street and put a grill to the curb. Looked brand new so we investigated. They had assembled it incorrectly and never used it. We put it back together correctly and used it for years.

Best two "garbage" finds was an older Weber gas grill, that thing cleaned up beautifully. I'd be shocked it was used 10 times in the 15 years of its life.
Other was getting some upper cabinets after the 2016 flood. They were nice solid oak cabinets out of a business that I put into my business at the time. Nice 8 foot sections.
I don't dumpster dive, but sometimes things just catch your eye.

went to an estate sale where the house was owned by a doctor. Scored some great Christmas decorations cheap on the last day.

In my area there a couple of older guys that drive around on the nights everybody puts out their trash to pick up things. Saves the garbage men a little work I guess.

Last week as I’m about to shower, my wife went for a bike ride and calls me and tells me someone put a 55” Toshiba flatscreen to the curb with a note that says, “ Works fine. Bought a new one and don’t need it.” Gives me the address and I tell her I’ll go get it with my truck as soon as I can. By the time if finish showering and get dressed and drive 4 blocks, it’s gone.

I bought a big (like 8ft wide and 6ft high) wooden bookcase with glass doors at a church yard sale for $50. Sold it like 2 years later for $500.
