The worst thing on earth is dogs aging as fast as they do. 16 years is a good run though. I got 12 out of my last one.

Lost my boy two weeks ago.

Sorry to hear that. My girl is going on 7 and I can’t even think about it.
She was so healthy and sparky up until a few months ago. She had kidney issues so we started giving sub q fluids at home. Then she got a mouth infection. Then pancreatitis from god knows what. Then she got a UTI and an eye infection. Stopped eating or drinking and the kidneys went south. Her poor little body just finally couldn’t go. Her breathing was difficult towards the end.

just made an appointment for my 15 year old mix to be put down next week. We got him when my youngest was 1. He slept in their beds, went to their baseball games, taught them unconditional love. Next Wednesday may kill me, but I know it is time and that does help. No shame in a life well lived and this dog had 15 years of car rides, steak dinners, and long walks. Peace brother. I’ve heard it said to not be afraid of grief, for it sits next to love.
I’m sorry brother.

Your post makes me sad. Take care.

I will never put down a dog at the vet again. That shite is horrible. The "they just fall asleep" is bs in my experience.

I could not be more grateful to our vet. Our sweet girl truly did just lay her head in my wife’s hand and her little body let go. It was quiet. Peaceful. At the same time though, I’ve felt like a sledgehammer nailed me in the chest.

I am sorry
I have one that's kept me here through 2 hard losses.
They are a gift from God

I agree. They’re so damn hard to lose.

I’ve had to do this 5 times now. The sixth will come in the next few years. It’s never easy, but I realized for some I held on too long which only extended their suffering. It’s hard to let go, but merciful when death is inevitable.

Feeling the spark of life leave her body has crushed me.
One of the hardest things I’ve ever done with my best buddy last year. He was wrapped in a blanket while I sat in a chair holding him. After 30 minutes my wife gently suggested we leave so he could be cremated. Walked out the saddest looking man you’d ever see, head hanging tears flowing.
Sorry for your loss, prayers for you all.

You gave her a good home and love and she loved you in return. The kindest thing you can do for her at this point is the hardest thing for you. I’m sorry for your loss, and I believe there is a heaven and you will see her there.

Twice in the last 18 months
Just rough.
Only advice is that even if you think you aren’t ready, you’ll be ready to bring a new one home. It’ll feel weird for a minute but you’ll enjoy them all so much in their own ways. Don’t let today’s pain keep you from another decade of happiness.
Let yourself grieve, but when the thought crosses your mind, don’t talk yourself out of it

Having had to experience it many times…. I’ve only regretted being too late. If seriously debating, it’s likely time already and fair to start making plans. Twice I’ve pushed the limit and those are the only I feel like I’ve let down.
I’m obviously not saying go crazy with it but any attached and caring person that’s gotten to “I think it might be time” is almost certainly safely where they won’t look back ten years later mad at themselves for helping their friend stop hurting

I somewhat understand what you're feeling, as I've had to do it multiple times over the years. If anything, I think it gets harder as you get older.
Although they were all family pets, I lost "my"
Chocolate lab in 2009. He was closest to me, and he loved nothing more than accompanying me on car/truck rides. Back in the Blockbuster days, he'd go nuts at the sound of my DVD player opening, because he knew we were off to the store to return it.
It was after losing Bubba Ray that I fully understood the line from Mr Bojangles: "After 20 years he still grieved."

Unfortunately our experience was not that way. We thought it would be and in the middle of the process as my boy is doing a bark/whine she tells us sometimes they vocalize.
I was livid and destroyed at the same time, best dog I have ever owned.
Wife and I walked out sobbing.
