OTrue Crime Discussion- Disappearance of Madeleine McCann

I have trouble sleeping some nights and usually kill time by going deep into rabbit holes about various true crime stories
I figured there’s gotta be plenty of posters who love the subject as well so I thought I’d start a thread about a case and see if we can’t get some good discussion/theories going. If it’s a success I can start a new thread every week or 2 covering a different case
For the first (and possibly only) thread, I decided to go with the Disappearance of Madeleine McCann
Both of the above quoted parts are just a quick summary of the case I took from the wiki page. There’s plenty more to the story and to this day it seems like everyone is split on what they think happened. One unique thing about this case is that the British media was very much pro McCann family while the Portuguese authorities thought the parents were hiding something. As a result, many of the articles detailing the story are portrayed with a strong bias towards whatever the author believes happened, so I highly recommend looking into all theories and details as opposed to just believing the first thing you read

For the first (and possibly only) thread, I decided to go with the Disappearance of Madeleine McCann
quote:
Madeleine Beth McCann disappeared on the evening of 3 May 2007 from her bed in a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, a resort in the Algarve region of Portugal, sparking what one newspaper called "the most heavily reported missing-person case in modern history". Her whereabouts remain unknown.
quote:
Madeleine was on holiday from the UK with her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann; her two-year-old twin siblings; and a group of family friends and their children. She and the twins had been left asleep at 20:30 in the ground-floor apartment, while the McCanns and friends dined in a restaurant 55 metres (180 ft) away.[5] The parents checked on the children throughout the evening, until Madeleine's mother discovered she was missing at 22:00. Over the following weeks, particularly after misinterpreting a British DNA analysis, the Portuguese police came to believe that Madeleine had died in an accident in the apartment and that her parents had covered it up. The McCanns were given arguido (suspect) status in September 2007, which was lifted when Portugal's attorney general archived the case in July 2008 because of a lack of evidence.

Great idea! I love True Crime Stories.
I think this is a part of child sex trafficking. But, something about the parents always bothered me. Same way with the JonBenet Ramsey case. I think the parents knew more than they were saying.
And, then there was the part about the parents meeting with Pope Benedict for a prayer. And we know the problems the Vatican has had with child sex abuse.

I still google that case from time to time to see if there are any updates. I don’t have any theories on who did it. For a while, I kind of believed the kidnapped & sold into trafficking theory, but I don’t anymore. For her sake.
Do y’all listen to any true crime podcasts? I’m addicted to Sword & Scale. Each episode covers a different case. Makes me actually look forward to my commute. Dirty John & Dr. Death were also great.

They killed her end of story
This makes it sound a lot better than it was, you couldn’t see the apartment from where they were, they dined round the corner etc.

Their resemblance to the police sketch is uncanny.

I need to research this more. I like these type of threads. I always learn a lot from them.
I just recently watched a documentary on Amanda Knox in Netflix. Is there a documentary you could link us to about Madeline?

I always thought this was the parents. Something about them always rubbed me the wrong way.

I've been listening to some podcasts recently. I'm hooked on Crime Junkie, Casefile and Up and Vanished.
Have you guys ever watched the series on the ID channel called Disappeared? I just can't believe how many people just up and disappear. Not traces of them, etc.
Maura Murray is one of those cases that just intrigues me.

Dr. Death is one that I just finished. Absolutely mind blowing, and frankly, pretty frightening.
I'll have to check Disappeared out.
I've never heard of the case of Madeleine McCann.
Just reading the Wikipedia page, I don't see enough evidence to think that the parents did it. They are doctors, seems weird that they would fake a kidnapping or anything like that.
It kind of seems like it was a kidnapping/ransom plot gone wrong.

The police fricked the investigation big time, especially the crime scene from the very beginning
As I mentioned in the OP, it seems like every time I have read discussions it’s nearly evenly split between 3 scenarios for what happened
1. The kidnapped by a stranger theory
2. Parents were responsible, with the most common theory being that she was given too much sedative to sleep and they accidentally killed her and covered it up
3. She woke up and wandered out of the room looking for her parents and either someone accidentally killed her (their room was apparently along a street next to the resort) or she ran into the wrong person while looking for her parents
Gun to my head I would guesss it was option 3, only because I feel like the other 2 have so many holes, but I truly have no clue

I still cannot get over the fact they left 2 small children alone and went off to eat and have a good time.
WTF, who leaves helpless babies alone like that? Poor baby, her parents should have been charged with child neglect and endangerment.
Had they just been decent parents, this never would have happened. Their guilt over their failure to protect their child has turned them into crazed conspiracy hunters.
Such an easily preventable tragedy with only the parents to blame.
I feel bad for them. It is a heartbreaking situation and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. But it angers me that it was so easily preventable.

I'm not a parent, so my opinion on that matter might not be as valid, but if it was a nice resort, and they were 150 feet from the building that the children were in, and they could see the building, then I don't think that them leaving them there is that unreasonable.
I couldn't really tell from the wiki page whether or not they had a view of the house though. I know the OP said that it wasn't in view, but the article makes it seem like they had an elevated view.
Also, from the article, it seems like the whole swingers/sedative angle came from unfounded rumors.

Yeah, that one is weird. I think she probably ran into the woods or something and has just never been found (died due to exposure to the elements).
I think the parents did the McCann thing, I don't remember all of the details about it, but I remember thinking that it was them. Something about them lying about going check on the kids or something.

I totally think this too. I think she was depressed, was drinking and driving, wrecked her car, got scared and died in the wolves.
