I’m genuinely interested in hearing these options. I’m not doubting you, I just don’t know anything about watches.
If you look around you could find a watch in the Seiko Prospex line that would have an automatic movement and sapphire crystal for less tha $400. You can generally get them for 25% below retail without much effort.
Here’s an example

Several of them that I think are great. Closest I've come was last summer in Florence where I actually got to the counter, but all they had was Mission to Venus (Pink).
Hit up the Rome store several days - nothing, then the day they came in they had an elaborate queue system run by some of the guys out on the street. Didn't have the patience. I'll be hitting up the swatch boutiques in Paris, Lyon and Cannes in June and hope I can come away with either Mercury, Moon (especially the new Moondust one), Neptune, Pluto or Jupiter. I won't kill a bunch of time in a queue though.
I want it more for the historical value and how it fits in to the trajectory of the watch industry. I'm not a huge Omega fan, and have sold more than the one I currently own and almost never wear (Seamaster Pro Planet Ocean 2201.51 42 mm).

Hamilton, Tissot, and Seiko are better at 300
Hamilton and Tissot are also under the Swatch company.
I'm sort of surprised they would do this to the Omega brand.

Personally I'm going around to everyone I see wearing a Speedmaster and saying "hey cool Swatch!"
I would just say thanks and keep going. Real watch enthusiasts are buying to impress others.

It was supposed to create excitement in watches and be a gateway into luxury watches.

I understand there was likely some "strategy" behind it. I'm still surprised.

G Shock Casioak models are really cool looking for $200.

Junk. Colors have leaked onto people’s wrists, battery can’t be replaced, and pushers known to break/fall off.
For what they are, I think one would be hard pressed to call them junk. Color leech only with Neptune, as far as I've seen, and battery is markedly easily changed with a readily available battery for replacement. I did see a post here and there about a pusher cover coming off, but I don't believe that to be a widespread issue, which I think is likely given the watch has continued to be wildly popular.
It serves some pretty clear purposes that I see (1) create foot traffic in Swatch Boutiques (2) source of revenue for the company from persons interested in the watch industry and where this fits in (3) recruit the FOMO crowd because there are some trendy and colorful offerings and it is affordable. Pretty clear marketing win for Swatch Group.

I just looked on Tags website and you are looking at a quartz if it's around 1000.
yeah this would be for my senior son...evidently buying class rings is a thing of the past and the majority of the boys receive watches from their parents.
Not spending the money on a rolex or Omega at that age, but would consider entry level Tag or Hamilton. The Hamilton was nice looking watch, but made for "aviation" which we will likely never use.
I'd rather a water proof Tag.

You're the second person in this thread who has felt the need to tell us this. First of all, why not? Second of all, what compelled you to tell us this as if we care?

Interesting item on Chrono24. One of the custom Benrus alarm watches LBJ would give as presidential gifts. Only $5800.
