I have a vintage whitnauer 2000. It's not a one of a kind but I've seen very few around. So consider something like that.

My favorite new watch is Armin Strom Edge Double Barrel - limited to 100 pieces, 8 days power reserve, outstanding reputation and future resale, open-worked so you can appreciate some of the inner workings. Also available in rose gold if youre willing to spend more and need something a little more dressy.

Price? Same price as a new base model Toyota Tacoma. But if youre looking for something unique that will hold its value and truly be a family heirloom then you can't go wrong.

I agree with your opinion about the general function of the no date Sub. But, if you are only going to own one nice watch I would go with the no date Sub. I'm not a Precision or Datejust fan (with the exception of the 41, fluted bezel with a blue dial). I predict a long term backlash to the bigger, wacky function, watch craze. Who really uses the chrono functions on a Daytona? Also later in life the OP can buy a dress watch (Patek would be my choice). IMHO, young guys can get away with a tool watch with a suit.

I am a sucker for the Omega's from the 1950's. I have a Seamaster and Constellation that are both real early production for those lines.

This!

Look at some vintage pieces.

I have an early 60's Seamaster that gets lots of compliments. If I was in the market now I'd be looking for an early Speedmaster.

You should definitely go with a Rolex, you will not be disappointed. They are flawless and a beautiful piece of jewelry. Look into a Daytona or even a stainless Sub, can't go wrong there. Also, don't listen to all the people telling you not to buy one. They just can't afford one or else they would be telling you to get one.

. The only to buy a Rolex is for the bracelet, and I'm not wearing a bracelet no matter what's on top.

You might like a Panerai Due 676. It's a 42MM and not as chunky as other Panerai's. But then again, I am a little bias as I own 3 Panerai's and don't frick with Rolex's. Also have a Cartier Tank Louis. I'd love a Patek, in due time.

Damn if I don't buy a watch every time one of these threads comes around.

I don't know any watch guys that dump on Tag.

Well let me be the first. I have hated Tag the minute they started using those fricked up integrated bracelets in the 80's. I was out at that point. I think they are a lower tier "luxury" brand. It's a starter point for guys who want to be into watches. The only stuff I like is the old Heuer like the Heuer calculator. That is one fantastic watch. Tag got away from that and it hurt them as a brand.

honestly... i'd write/call a few watchmakers, go to switzerland and see their operations, what speaks to you best. you can learn how they do what they do and why it's so expensive. once you find the right fit, then you make a purchase. they might even show you something you wouldn't normally find. europeans artisans are generally very welcoming.

This is your recommendation? That he go to fricking Switzerland?

Ding ding ding we have a winner.

I'm also not a huge Rolex fan in general, but I do like the clean look of a no date sub.

A sub looks great with a suit. This is dumb.

It's far from the most affordable Rolex. Oyster Perpetual, Explorer I and II, AirKing, and Milgauss are all cheaper. A GMT II is only 500 bucks more, which is less than the sales tax on any of those listed. And that's only if we're sticking to Stainless Steel...

I'm not a fan of how many people try to pull off a sub mariner as an all around watch. It's not the watch to wear with a suit. It's a dive watch.

It's not ideal as a dress watch but . The submariner is smaller and thinner than most other dive watches and is an appropriate size for a modern dress watch. Would say the same about a planet ocean as it's huge in comparison. The styling is pretty conservative. It can work with a suit or blazer and not look out of place. Certainly not black tie.

Rolex is certainly a dress watch. And a dive watch. I should have bought the first one I ever tried on in a jewelry store. It was $3250 and it had date.

Get something you can use a NATO strap with.

Of course, this is the OT so this idea will be lol'd to hell, but a vintage sub with a NATO is a great look.

Ridiculous. If a Rolex Sub on nato is good enough for James Bond, it's good enough for me:
