If you are looking to spend $8k but have no idea what you want, then I would advise pumping the brakes and taking time to figure out what it is you like first. Buy some reasonably priced Seikos in the diver style, datejust style, pilot style, or whatever styles might appeal to you. Also try different case sizes. Wear them for several months and figure out what it is you truly like. Then go get the Rolex or whatever expensive watch it is that you actually want. Do your homework.

Gotcha, The one pictured is only 449.00 and I like the design. Guess it's a reasonable enough price to take a chance on something new.

How much do you want to spend? And is this work/play around watch or dressier watch?

I am a sucker for the Omega's from the 1950's. I have a Seamaster and Constellation that are both real early production for those lines.

This!
Look at some vintage pieces.
I have an early 60's Seamaster that gets lots of compliments. If I was in the market now I'd be looking for an early Speedmaster.
----
Sixties Omegas were great with in house movements.

They were using a Seiko movement if I remember right. So essentially it's a Titanium Seiko at $449. If you like it buy it though. That's my motto

If you haven't seen Omega's new Speedmaster page it's awesome. You can upload your own photo of your watch.

Yeah, it would mainly be something id wear casually taking the place of my luminox. So that not something that would bother me.

quote:You can do a lot with that, but it depends on what you're actually looking for. There are a lot of classic options in higher-end watches that retail for less than that, and you can get even better deals if you go gray market (which I wouldn't actually recommend). Omega, Tag, Breitling, and other "mainstream" high-end brands have a lot of options in and below that price range. And from a professional standpoint, they will be recognized by colleagues (all men, most women) as something you put some thought and a little money into.
I'm looking around 8k.
If you're looking for a premium brand that every sorostitute and waitress will recognize, you can't beat Rolex. Whatever they invested in marketing to get their name in every movie about stockbrokers or successful up-and-comers in the 1980s and early 1990s has really paid off. And they are great watches. Contrary to what an earlier poster posted, they are certainly not the 3-series of luxury brands. That would more accurately apply to Omega, Tag etc. But Rolex by and large is pretty overpriced. You're not getting hand-crafted casing or "in-house movements" or anything else, yet you're shelling out 8-10k minimum for a stainless steel automatic watch. For some, that's worth it for the brand recognition. If two average people saw a $10,000 Daytona lying next to $50K AP, A. Lange & Sohne, or Patek Philippe, they'd take the Rolex every time.
ETA: There are a couple of popular blogs you can check out. When I decided to waste $15,000 on my watches after coming back from deployment a few years ago, they were a big help in choosing.

Why wouldn't you go full auto?
Depends what you are into...
Manual wind = connoisseur, likes vintage automobiles, art, wine/scotch
Quartz = values reliability, practicality, Honda Pilots, likes Zima/ Beer
Automatics = likes new trendy itiems, likes current trendy higher end cars, like an aged bourbon

Do it. It looks like a Kobold to me:

So subjective. We actually have no idea where to draw the line on "in house movements". We may be debating this one a while.

Yeah they certainly do. Was looking for something a little nicer than my Lumi , but will take a beating the same.

I am going for a simple, classy/professional design. Black dial and steel band.
I do like the Rolex Air-King, Date 34, and Explorer II (mostly because of the GMT time).
I'm in no hurry to get a piece. Hell, I'm not even sure I'm going to get one quite yet. But, it interests me and I'm trying to formulate an opinion based on other experiences.

That's fair. I crudely mean that with a Rolex you're getting a watch that's mass-produced, largely by machine, with a good many outsourced parts. It's not some old dude with a monocle tinkering with the thing with tiny tools and oddly steady hands for a septuagenarian.

I'm highly leaning Tudor black bay for you. You can get one for less than 3 grand

Actually they are not done largely by machine (again subjective). It still takes them about a year to make a watch. They use robots but those robots are controlled by humans. Robots do polishing but then they are finish polished by humans. Read this article from a well respected watch blog:

95% of automatic watches allow for hand winding. And many require it for the initial kick start before kinetics kick in.
