Buy the seller, not the watch.

$12k seems low. Depends on the condition. Does this person have the internet?

Honestly, I stay away from most second hand nowadays. Don’t have the budget for what I’m interested in, don’t trust much that is within my budget. Also, remember, box and papers can be faked, and if no box and papers, Patek is no longer providing authenticity certificates for watches under 30 years of age.

Finally, just get a Lange Saxonia 37mm. Not much more, hell of a lot more watch.

What's the true market value? Guy is a watch repairer. Legit. Bought it from an estate who wanted to dump it

Looks like it has never been worn

It sells for $20ks. If you owned it and tried to sell it to a reseller, you’d probably get $10k to $15k, or around there.

I may just be cautious, but I probably wouldn’t mess with it. I also find that model very underwhelming, so that may be part of it.

I plan on just holding onto it. Don't plan on wearing it

He also has a 82 rolex DJ on a jubilee bracelet. 4500. Decent deal?

Make sure it doesn’t need service. That will put you back another 3-4,000.

How is the bracelet on the DJ? That watch doesn’t hold much value long term. That’s a much easier watch to source than other SS models.

On another note. Adler’s can go frick itself. I walked in the other day to inquire about a few time pieces and because the guy didn’t immediately recognize me he basically showed me the door. Wife was pissed because we purposely used them for a handful of registries due to a relationship at their Metairie and BR location.

Eta: obtuse can I get a ref on a 5167

Tell him you'll give 9K for the watch and half of anything over 17K you sell it for.

Patek only charges 1,000 for a full service on a 3 hand auto Calatrava and you can get them serviced for 1/2 to 2/3rd that.

As others have noted that is a screaming bargain based on the condition. ~$20k is the going asking price and transaction costs of $17k would be solid. Take that info and roll it into "buying the seller".

Hobnail Calatravas are a quintessential dress watch. Can't really go wrong with them and at 37mm it will hold value better than the smaller Pateks. I don't like the roman numerals but that is just me.

If you are comfortable it is legit I would buy it especially at that price you won't lose money and can actual make some. If there is something you like more there is the option of buying it flipping it quick for $16.5 or $17 and buying something you like more.

Picture for those that don't know PP references.

That's the exact watch. If I buy something like that, how should I store it? Just keep it in the box?

And thoughts on an 82 DJ jubilee bracelet for 4500?

I would wear this before that.

I’m also not worried about flipping for a few grand because I hate selling shite.

Pass unless absolutely perfect condition and you have a connection to that year such as a birth year. The old jubilee bracelets aren’t the best quality and will require costly restoration.

How recently has it been serviced? That will cost some money.

Tons of DJs on the market. Recent makes are far superior.

You can store it however you like except hanging it in your shower etc. Most people with multiple watches would likely keep it with their others in a watch box or roll just for convenience and space issue. The Patek boxes are nice though if there isn't a space issue.

That is probably a low average price BUT:

1. condition is everything when it comes to used watches

2. there are so many variations of the DJ they can vary significantly even at the same age and in the same condition. Some just have more appeal to a larger number of buyers.

One thing I look for in a Jubilee bracelet is how much sag does it have. If it needs to be sent to someone like Michael Young to restore and tighten it up that is a cost consideration just like whether it needs a service or not.
